An additional regularly scheduled reminder, some of us like the boys on the show. Please stop speaking for me and telling me, or anyone else, what we do/should like.
William is one of the boys I like.
So is James.
This is just a reminder that unless you watch a show by legal means, have a Nelson’s box and live in the US, boycotting a US TV show will have zero affect on its ratings.
But go off I guess.
A quick FYI on conventions, if a guest cancels they are not paid. Do not believe the money hungry paparazzi/autograph hounds who are upset that they aren’t getting what they want from an actor.
Do not feed them attention or give them money to feed themselves either.
The reason actors cancel close to the event is because there are attempts to get them to attend. You know how sometimes you have to juggle work meetings, or social events, and you try till the last minute and realise something has gotta give?
This is why a “professional commitments pending” clause. Otherwise actors would never book an event.
You’re also not entitled to see them at one, and they are not obligated to attend
If anyone thinks Melissa is the most canceled guest in the world I know you’ve only attended or know about few conventions
This is your regularly scheduled reminder that not everyone watches a show for shipping.
It’s not personal if the ship you have created and enjoyed isn’t canon.
It’s also not personal is one part of a canon ship decides to leave a show. Kidnapping is still illegal, as is slave labour.
Hey people of the tumblr and Twitter, especially the fans of a female driven superhero show that continues to defy your wants.
It’s not activism to complain about a show if you only watch through others reviews, statements or gifsets.
It’s not activism to assume single women on television loose their sexuality
It’s not activism to be upset that Alex wants kids because you do not. Both choices are valid. Wanting kids is not heteronormative either. Fun buzzword though.
It’s not activism to cling to something that has long been moved on from, nor is projecting that onto a character who is making healthy choices for herself.
It’s not activism to claim a lack of representation just because your ship is no longer sailing.
It’s really not activism to hate on a new character just because she isn’t your fav.
It’s not even in the same planet of activism when you start sending racist messages to the actress who plays said character, whether coded or not.
The predominance of the notion that fandom expectations/wants are =/= to activism is silly at best.
All of us could do with being a little bit more like Alex.
Just putting it out there, unless you have a Nielsen’s box your viewing of any show does not count.
Additionally, if you think a show that rates network average consistently on a highly contested night is in trouble, you might wanna check your bias.
Marie Kondo your viewing if you don’t like it, Supergirl owes fandom their particular special interest/afternoon special/niche wants as much as Kara owes Lena her identity.
By that I mean not all all, just in case you get it all twisted.
The Long (NeverEnding) Pitch
Making television is simply a series of pitches to remain on the air.
Pitch 1: Option to Script
Pitch 2: Option for Pilot
Pitch 3: Series Pick Up
Yay! They got to series no more pitches, right? Noooope.
Every episode needs to be pitched to someone (each room/studio/network handles this part differently), and then the mountains of notes from studio and network get addressed.
As quick as the season starts to air it’s time to pitch the next season to studio and network, this process starts before the holiday season. This is especially true for the DCTV shows where they have to get permission from DC for what characters to use - and visa versa being told by DC what characters they want them to include - as the process of getting permission can be long and arduous and requires a pitch of how they’re going to use the character.
Next season pitches begin before contract negotiations start, and are completed before they end. This part is the most important to note, because while shows realise that negotiations are happening they have to drive forward. Now if it’s a lead actor they tend to delay pick-up till their negotiations are complete ie: You can’t have Supergirl without Melissa, but you can have Supergirl without Winn.
Otherwise we can have really early pick-ups for the next season of a show, like we saw when Supergirl was renewed January this year. That means they had cemented certain plot points and all this happened before Floriana decided against reupping her contract (which was her right to do so).
I can’t confirm that they were bound to the marriage storyline, but I have heard enough rumblings that it came down from on-high that this was the way to go. Although, it’s important to note that they would have had to pitch to Floriana the generalities of her characters arc for the coming season, so the marriage storyline was likely quite cemented I suspect that had Floriana stayed there would have been 3 weddings in the crossover event.
Now these points are also true for Mon-El, the use of his character would have been approved during season 1. He was always going to be in the show, most likely always going to be a love interest of Kara, and always going to be jettisoned into space at the end of the season because the whole series they have been working towards introducing the Legion of Superheroes.
This is also why it is impossible to change the big picture stuff if it’s not being accepted online during the season. Decisions had already been made. They don’t make decisions to intentionally affront subsections of fandom, that’s just a happy accident of those subsections thinking their opinions are the only ones that count.
