Dr Pym handling the climax of the emerald atlas by demanding speak to the countess’s manager will never not be funny
Almost every action Dr. Pym takes at the beginning of the Fire Chronicle while chaperoning Michael and Emma is absolutely bonkers. Granted, some of it he doesn’t have any other options but some of it is just straight up lunacy. Here’s a list of the things he does that are Bad Babysitter Material TM:
Sends the Wibberlys back to an absolutely terrible orphanage / uses the excuse “infestation of turtles” to get Miss Crumley to accept them back
Fails to answer a single letter over the course of like 8 months, even when Kate is telling him she’s having prophetic dreams
Leaves Michael and Emma, who are panicked after a near death experience and Kate vanishing, alone in Italy where they don’t speak the language. I get he had to go investigate some things but he didn’t even walk them to the cafe!
Constantly refuses to answer questions and withholds information smh
Takes them to visit/trespass on Hugo Algernon and GETS THEM SHOT AT?!!! STANISLAUS WHY WERE YOU SO CAVALIER THERE YOUR FRIEND IS SHOOTING BULLETS AT CHILDREN!!!??
Says they don’t have to worry about trolls in Malpesa but then immediately leads them right into the path of a troll. This is an honest error but it’s still goofy ass behavior
Takes two children to tomb rob, bringing Michael with him into the grave.
Leaves Emma (a 12 year old) alone in a graveyard keeping watch. I get there was no one else and also she didn’t want to go in the tomb but still. Bad babysitting.
Gives in to Michael’s begging and lets him climb into the secret chamber, genuinely thinking he won’t touch anything or snoop or disobey orders. Stanislaus, have you even met Michael? Of course he’s gonna poke around!
As a result of the previous entry, Michael ends up drinking a potentially poisonous potion on Pym’s watch. I cannot stress enough, this is not responsible babysitting.
Has Michael and Emma jump off a four story building into a canal. It is necessary so they can escape Rourke so it’s not really his fault but also maybe things wouldn’t have come to that if he answered his fucking mail. So I’m gonna list it anyways.
Finally, as if all of the above wasn’t enough, he’s literally lying to the kids the entire time. He literally tells Michael he has no clue what the prophecy says when he actually knows it foretells the deaths of the keepers/Wibberlys. Sir, what the actual fuck are you thinking?
In conclusion, Dr Pym is a complex character who I have conflicting thoughts about. But one thing I’m sure of is that he should NOT be allowed to babysit, ever. I get that the situation is perilous, but still. Kate or Gabriel would simply NEVER be so chill about preteens being shot at by Hugo Algernon. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
This is genuinely my favorite scene of Dr. Pym in the entire series for two (2) reasons. One: he’s so petty and passive aggressive towards the countess here and I find it hilarious. Two: his plan to defeat her was literally calling her boss and reporting her. Dr. Pym is really out here fighting evil by asking to speak to the manager.
Katherine Wibberly the woman you are!
I love how she has absolutely no tolerance for Dr. Pym’s greater good shtick. She will never accept children’s lives being sacrificed, even to keep the atlas safe. And she puts her money where her mouth is, defending every child in danger that she comes across throughout the series, no matter the risk to herself. I love her. Especially when she’s angry; she deserves to be angry after everything.
(Also now that I think about it this is really good foreshadowing here because Dr Pym putting getting the atlas over the safety of the kids of Cambridge Falls mirrors him hiding the prophecy and the potential for the Wibberly siblings to die so that he can focus on stopping the Dire Magnus.)
"There is no heaven or hell but of our own making."
Dr. Stanislaus Pym
Dr Pym is actually such a menace who thought letting him babysit was okay
This scene is just:
I rest my case
the fact that Dr Pym can’t make a fire without using magic is hilarious to me. this man has been walking around for 2000+ years, is incredibly educated, and one of the most powerful and respected people in magical society, and yet he lacks the knowledge and skill of an 8 year old girl (or boy) scout.
