One of the most common and costly diseases faced by the dairy industry is bovine mastitis, a potentially fatal bacterial inflammation of the mammary gland. Widespread use of antibiotics to treat the disease is often blamed for generating antibiotic-resistant bacteria. However, researchers investigating staphylococcal populations responsible for causing mastitis in dairy cows in South Africa found that humans carried more antibiotic-resistant staphylococci than the farm animals with which they worked.
Acute dacryocystitis
Acute dacryocystitis is fulminant acute infection of the lacrimal sac, usually staphylococci, occurring in case of obstruction of lacrimal. The infection progresses within hours with an inflammatory major distension of the lacrimal sac. It requires urgent treatment because it can spread quickly and cause orbital cellulitis. Or sepsis, especially in newborns and immunocompromised. Usually the causative organisms are staphylococci. Proper treatment is: - hospitalization - Removal of secretions to direct examination, culture and sensitivity, blood cultures.

Aggressive infections are a growing health problem all over the world. The development of resistant bacteria is rampant and, in the United States, resistant staphylococci cause more deaths than AIDS on an annual basis. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen are studying a new form of...

VJ agar, which is both a selective and differential media, used to specifically identify Staphylococcus aureus, which is a potential human pathogen, with Beta hemolysis ability and the cause of staph infections. this media specifically selects for the growth of staphylococci, and differentiates for mannitol fermentors (via pH indicator, which changes the media color from orange to yellow indicating mannitol was fermented and an acid byproduct was produced). the media also contains the compound tellulrite, which S. aureus can reduce to produce a black byproduct causing the bacteria to turn black as seen above, which means the bacteria also possesses the enzyme coagulase. the VJ agar is one of the main tests used to identify pathogenic strains of S. aureus.
