The Chinesca, 2017
For those who have never visited Mexicali, or who do not know the city at all, there is this place called La Chinesca, it is an old neighborhood located just below what is the city of Mexicali. At the beginning of the 20th century, thousands of Chinese immigrants arrived to work on the farmland of the American company Colorado River Land Company. Many of them stayed after concluding the work in an area of Mexicali, which soon happened to be called “ La Chinesca ”. Due to the high temperatures in the area, between 40ºC and 48ºC in summer, the Chinese population created an underground system that allowed them to take refuge from the scorching sun. Today it is possible to visit some parts of La Chinesca thanks to a tour that seems out of a thriller. This city has already gone through two fires, has been abandoned for many years and has been flooded over time. However, cachanillas (Mexicalenses) always come to rebuild and restore it, and thus, tell an important part of the history and culture of this Baja California capital.
Star27 has here for us a tribute to this part of the history of our beloved city Mexicali, the city that captured the sun.
