NGC 7789 is an open star cluster also known as Caroline’s Rose. It is located in the constellation Cassiopia and was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783. She was an astronomer who also discovered a number of comets and other deep sky objects. Her older brother William Herschel discovered many objects as well as the planet Uranus. They often collaborated. This cluster is comprised of hundreds of young and old stars and in this photograph you can see the differences between those two star types by their colors. Last night was globular cluster night as I photographed three different star clusters in the region of the Hercules constellation. This one is M13 the great Hercules star cluster, probably one of the most famous, if I can use that term, globular star clusters in the sky. There are several hundred thousand stars in this cluster, most of them quite old. Imagine living on a planet at the center of this cluster. The Pleiades have been known to humans for thousands of years. They are the most prominent open star cluster in the sky. They’ve been used by seafaring navigators and referenced by ancient chroniclers. We can find cultural evidence in ancient Celtic, Aztec, Chinese, Babylonian (as well as many other) civilizations of this beautiful star cluster. The nine brightest stars of the Pleiades are named for the Seven Sisters of Greek mythology: Sterope, Merope, Electra, Maia, Taygeta, Celaeno, and Alcyone, along with their parents Atlas and Pleione. The cultural impact of this star cluster can’t be ignored even in modern times: in Japan, the constellation was mentioned under the name Mutsuraboshi ("six stars") in the 8th-century Kojiki. The constellation is now known in Japan as Subaru. And of course the famous Japanese automobile company was named after it.
