Big ask for all of y'all: help me place my career field into a Starfleet division.
So as many of y'all who follow may know or have figured out, I am a speech-language pathology grad student. Being the giant Trekkie that I am, I want to get a Starfleet insignia for my vehicle.
However, I can't quite figure out where I, a hopefully future speech-language pathologist, would fit into Starfleet.
We are a communication science, but we don't necessarily go communicate with strange new worlds (although that most certainly could be argued to be in the job description).
We are most definitely a science, but we don't simply collect data and write research and call it a day - we are actively trying to improve someone's speech or communication ability.
We are considered a medical profession, but not all SLPs are known as Medical SLPs. There's a specific branch of our profession that treats swallowing disorders, language and speech impairments from dementia or TBIs, and/or eating, speaking, or language impairments from strokes or neurodegenerative diseases. This also extends to kids born with conditions impairing their ability to eat or swallow. This is, as you might have guessed from my being stumped as to where my profession would fit, not where I intend to specialize.
I'm receiving mostly feedback on Discord that we would be either science or medical. My Trek Discord's consensus is Science. My Writing Discord's consensus is Medical.
And only like one of my cohort members is a Trekkie.
Trekkies of Tumblr, SLPs (and grad students) of Tumblr, and people who fit both categories...what say you?
