hey is the starfriends site a social network that can be used to find friends or is it exclusively with the purpose of finding dates?

It can be for either. :) Here’s an example of the tags page:

So the last section of tags is “we’d be/do/have together” - and there you can put things like “romance”, “sex”, “friendship”, whatever you’re looking for.

That means if you put “friendship” in that box you’ll be matched with other people who also have “friendship” in that box.

You can also use !not tags to rule out anyone who is looking for “romance” or “sex” or whatever, which is more advanced and would narrow down your matches a lot. For most people it’s probably unnecessary to use !not tags, but it’s an option if you want to be 100% sure!

'Starfriends' is also a good site for finding friends/dates!! They have an extensive tagging system to find people you'd like. I believe the creator of the site is autistic.
