stark wargs + propaganda and rumors
hey grrm this is the bird that Sansa should get
it’s grey and white (the Stark colors) and it’s called a gyrfalcon, which is the largest falcon species
What is the cannibal starks theory👀
oh it’s not a theory it’s just like. recognizing the elements/appearances of cannibalism in the starks’ storylines. like in the varamyr prologue, we know that it’s seen as an “abomination” (at least in haggon’s eyes) to eat the flesh of man while in the skin of your animal. whenever varamyr does eat human flesh, it’s painted in a horrifying light, as an example of him forgoing his humanity. arya has already hunted men as nymeria, grey wind was notoriously violent in battle, bran has most likely been fed human meat by coldhands, and rickon is currently on the island infamous for cannibalism. cannibalism (thematic or literal) is just kind of a connecting thread throughout their stories. it’s also a semi-popular speculation that jon may attack/eat people out of fear or anger while he’s stuck inside of ghost at the beginning of twow. jon does have warg hunger instincts/shared physical sensations with him:
It was a hunger inside him, sharp as a dragonglass blade. A hunger… he could feel it. It was food he needed, prey, a red deer that stank of fear or a great elk proud and defiant. He needed to kill and fill his belly with fresh meat and hot dark blood. His mouth began to water with the thought.
[…]
“Come, Ghost,” Jon told the wolf. “With me. You're hungry, I know. I could feel it.”
- jon xii, asos
The taste of hot blood filled Jon's mouth, and he knew that Ghost had killed that night. No, he thought. I am a man, not a wolf. He rubbed his mouth with the back of a gloved hand and spat.
- jon iii, adwd
I’m a fan of the idea that jon will struggle with his humanity after getting… un-second-lifed, and I hope we get to explore more of these darker aspects of skinchanging with the stark kids in general
Just realized that the Starks are werewolves and the Boltons are vampires and the 8000 year old Stark-Bolton rivalry is just werewolves vs vampires and I—
Jon, after waking up from wolf dream #297, going outside and smelling the air through Ghost’s nose, dodging Melisandre as she’s telling him he has power, making absolutely no rebuttal to people calling him a beastling: I’m normal I’m normal I’m normal I’m normal I’m normal I’m norm—
“Those you call the children of the forest have eyes as golden as the sun, but once in a great while one is born amongst them with eyes as red as blood, or green as the moss on a tree in the heart of the forest. By these signs do the gods mark those they have chosen to receive the gift. The chosen ones are not robust, and their quick years upon the earth are few, for every song must have its balance. But once inside the wood they linger long indeed. A thousand eyes, a hundred skins, wisdom deep as the roots of ancient trees. Greenseers." (Bran III, ADWD)
Grey Wind: gold eyes
Lady: gold eyes
Nymeria: gold eyes
Summer: gold eyes
Ghost: red eyes
Shaggydog: green eyes
I actually wrote a thing about this a while ago, but I was just thinking about this connection again. What does it mean, grrm 👁👄👁
"I can be strong too. I can be as strong as Robb."
- Arya II, A Game of Thrones
"The wolf blood." Arya remembered now. "I'll be as strong as Robb. I said I would."
- Arya X, A Clash of Kings
I'm a prince of the north, a Stark of Winterfell, almost a man grown, I have to be as brave as Robb.
- Bran IV, A Storm of Swords
I must be brave, like Robb, she told herself.
- Sansa IV, A Storm of Swords
Younger Stark kids + being like Robb
Lord Tywin would soon march on Riverrun, she heard. [...] He'd bought a ton of silver to forge magic swords that would slay the Stark wargs. (Arya II, ACOK)
-
“Warg,” said Jojen Reed.
Bran looked at him, his eyes wide. “What?”
“Warg. Shapechanger. Beastling. That is what they will call you, if they should ever hear of your wolf dreams.”
The names made him afraid again. “Who will call me?”
“Your own folk. In fear. Some will hate you if they know what you are. Some will even try to kill you.” (Bran V, ACOK)
-
"Aye. All that, and more. You are a warg too, they say, a skinchanger who walks at night as a wolf." King Stannis had a hard smile. "How much of it is true?" (Jon XI, ASOS)
-
Lord Janos was red-faced and quivering. "The beast," he gasped. "Look! The beast that tore the life from Halfhand. A warg walks among us, brothers. A WARG! This . . . this creature is not fit to lead us! This beastling is not fit to live!" (Jon XII, ASOS)
-
"Then you had best be on your way, boy." Slynt laughed, dribbling porridge down his chest. "Greyguard's a good place for the likes of you, I'm thinking. Well away from decent godly folk. The mark of the beast is on you, bastard."
[...]
"No," Lord Janos protested, flecks of porridge spraying from his lips. "No, unhand me. He's just a boy, a bastard. His father was a traitor. The mark of the beast is on him, that wolf of his… Let go of me!” (Jon II, ADWD)
-
“When Stark changed into a wolf, his northmen did the same. The mark of the beast was on them all. Wargs birth other wargs with a bite, it is well-known. It was all my brothers and I could do to put them down before they slew us all." (Davos III, ADWD)
-
She was the night wolf. (The Blind Girl, ADWD)
Just some extra werewolf-y lines about the Stark kids.
