How Context Affects 'If I Fail You': Spoilers for Starkid's Black Friday (dude it's free on YouTube, go watch it then read my thing)
https://youtu.be/Bqt4_tHLSB4?si=Oz4HFk2DNOr8_-HK FULL SHOW HERE
Since its the season and I also found myself fully fucking bawling on the bus listening to this song, I think it's time I talk about how fucking powerful this Horror Comedy musical about a parody of Tickle Me Elmo taking over the world is and the context it now holds in my head after having the year from Hell.
For those of you who haven't read The Black Book or simply don't know what I mean, Black Friday is a musical by Team Starkid brought out in 2018 on YouTube, set in the fictional city of Hatchetfield, Michigan. The main plot revolves around shopping for the holidays on Thanksgiving Night at the mall and follows widowed father Tom Houston as he joins the hype train in order to cheer up his grieving son with the latest toy, a Tickle Me Wiggly, this fuzzy green fella who talks in uwu speak and might just be an eldritch monster from another world wanting to destroy Planet Earth with his mayhem and bloodlust. Got it? Good.
When I first saw this musical, it was only my second ever Starkid show, following my indoctrination after seeing The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals previously. And yes a lot of things make me cry but piling Daddy Issues reawakening in my 20s was just the cherry on top of a really terrible year as I relistened to this soundtrack. And maybe the credit should go to the amazing writing of Jeff Blim for songs like Black Friday, If I Fail You, Take Me Back and What Tim Wants to name a few. Or maybe the credit should go to one of Starkid's best actors in my opinion, Dylan Saunders who somehow made a sympathetic Jafar totally believable in Twisted and an unhinged Dumbledore work in A Very Potter Musical.
There's a certain magic about Dylan when he sings the serious numbers, something that captivates an audience so directly and poignantly that the world stands still in his wake. And nothing puts this point across finer than the absolute tear jerker of a number If I Fail You.
This number comes after all the bloodshed, all the madness has accumulated into the other shoppers forming a cult to Wiggly Worship and the only ones left who can save the day are a tired sales assistant, a young girl with psychic powers, a pediatric nurse who's currently unconscious and a bereaved ex-soldier who has his son's best interests at heart but can't get away from his innate fear of failure and his own guilt regarding his Jane's death.
As the song starts he's breaking out of the doll's mind breaking spell and seeing things clearly. Having to understand that his son never actually asked for that toy or wanted it. Tom wanted it for his son, as proof he loved him. But as Lex points out "Kids are all into Fortnite, dude!" and Tom has to finally realise that he's got it all wrong.
He reflects on the accident again, harking back to his first number, What Tim Wants, reminding himself of how Jane made him feel, reminding himself of who he was before the loss. And then he makes a solemn vow to never let his son down like this again. And that's when I start full on bawling. This man went through the imaginable pain of returning from fighting for his country, tried to make a happy life for himself when he came home, and lost it all over again in the blink of an eye until he was blinded to his own need to be the father his son needed.
The lines hit so much harder when you wish your own father could have that same mental clarity.
"If I fail you one more time, the mountain I would have to climb, is so high up that I would have to die,
Oh I, I failed you once, but I won't fail again."
And I'm gone by that point. Of course this is then followed by a campy number about bringing the birth of an Eldritch God but that number breaks me so much more than it used to in my life. Before this year, Lex's number Black Friday was my kicker. But now it will always be If I Fail You. It would be petty as HELL to show my Dad this song and show so I won't but I am tempted to at least post that I'm listening to the song on my more public socials in the hopes he might listen to it and finally see my fucking point but hey I'm not bitter.
SO GUESS WHAT I'LL BE WATCHING ON BLACK FRIDAY?!
Yeah apparently I like hurting myself so emotionally that I cry. 🙃
Anyway go watch Black Friday if you haven't yet this year!
