his patience was becoming like the fraying end of a short piece of string. snappy, short and rather mean. he was living in a constant bubble of testing those around him and keeping them on a short leash, forever pulling back before things could spiral too far out of hand. it was a testament to the decaying psyche of his own mind, constantly pushing and pulling at the seams.
his distrustful nature towards those around him, even those within the seven. was not hard to ignore and it wasn't difficult to understand why. starlight had given him plenty of reason in the past which unfortunately placed her directly in the firing line of his fouler moods.
had it not been for insight, it would have been like a powder keg ready to explode. somehow, he managed to maintain composure through sheer necessity alone. the need to remain in control of himself and not allow things to descend into something uglier.
thankfully, it worked in annie's favour as he turned toward her with an unreadable but not entirely dangerous expression. a difficult thing to achieve with him these days but not exactly impossible.
the tension still sat visibly within the lines of his posture, shoulders stiff as if physically restraining himself from something ugly beneath the surface. ugliness always had been lurking there.
his gaze lingered on her for a moment too long, attempting to deduct whether her words came from genuine concern or simply another carefully crafted performance for his benefit.
“don't you always know what to say...”
it wasn't quite an accusation. more a statement weighed down by lingering irritation. it settled visibly within the tightening of his jaw, annoyance flickering there alongside something more difficult to place. he stepped slightly closer then, not threatening enough to constitute danger but enough to feel intentional.
“do you actually believe what you're saying right now,” he asked quietly, “or are you just telling me what you think i want to hear?”
