Star Magic Ball 2015: From a netizen’s view

    It is the time of the year when we get to see the Philippines’ version of the New York Fashion Week- ball gowns, high slits, intricate designs, gems, laces... Name it, the Filipinos also have it. We are blessed to have a variety of talented and world class fashion designers like Michael Cinco, Francis Libiran, Pepsi Herrera, Paul Cabral, Rajo Laurel and a lot more. Because of this, not only Beyonce in an Oscar dela Renta ensemble can rock the red carpet, we also have Julia Barretto in Pepsi Herrera (based from last year’s ball) who can expose the sense of fashion that the Filipinos have in an event of elegance and sophistication known as “The Star Magic Ball.” Being so much anticipated by the Filipino netizens, (including me) it’s been always a part of the world of social media’s trending topics when this time comes. But! Is the “amazement” we feel during this grand ball always come in a good way?

I thought of blogging about this not because I’m trying hard to be a fashion critic or whatever- but I’m sure most of you who will be reading this are just merely netizens like me. So you might as well can relate to the points I’m going to make. Do I make any sense?

Having that said, let’s start off with of course, the tandem I’m most gaga over during the SMB; KathNiel.

Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla

Yaaaay! Best Dressed Couple! I think they won that award because I can see that there was really a connection between DJ’s tux and Kath’s gown. Not just because both of them are in white, but it’s just that, they really go together. And ohlala, DJ has been so obsessed in these “folded-end pants”!!! It works or the ball. I usually thought that it could only be fit for casual events but when I saw it on DJ, I realized that it can be a formal too. (I don’t know if it’s just because it’s DJ who wore it.)

But on Kath’s side...

Well, it’s Michael Cinco- a great designer. His works are just very high-fashion and wearing his pieces will be like winning miss Universe. But in Kath’s case, I think she looked “more mature” because of the gown. She has this perfect morena skin, and wearing long sleeves will discard one of her assets. For me, long sleeves add a “mature” vibe to the totality of the look. But overall, all the flourishes embroidered in the gown and the whole thing is really, really fabulous. Anyway, she’s still Kathryn Bernardo. Anything she wears can always look elegant. Besides, her gown for this year is waaaaay better from last year. Sorry, Albert Andrada.

Julia Montes

Behold, the Phenomenal Primetime Princess, Julia Montes!

When I saw her pictures, all hell broke loose- it was a perfect definition of the word “Class.” I mean, most of the celebrities in the event walked and dressed up with class, but in Julia Montes’ case, she didn’t need so much intricacy on her gown to look classy. Just white and a bit of gems on her waist and off she went then BAM! A goddess.

But, what happened to the other Julia?

Her gown from last year’s ball was very much talked about. She really deserved being awarded as “Best Dressed”, but what came into her that made her “not to get ready” for this event? Was she like, “I’m okay, I don’t need to exert an effort this year because I already won last year...”??? I bet she was. But for me, she would’ve been consistent in terms of wearing jaw-dropping gowns every year. I have nothing against her designer, Mark Bumgarner, but really, it doesn’t work for me. She should’ve worn her cotillion dress on the red carpet instead.

I haven’t seen a better view of her cotillion gown, but I bet it’s more “red carpet-worthy” than the other. Looking forward to a better gown next time, Juls!

Bea Alonzo

I’ve always loved Alexander McQueen.

Especially when Bea Alonzo wore one of his works.

Aside from the fact that she’s wearing Alexander McQueen’s, (which is every girl’s dream), she looked really stunning in this white gown. Because of her, I can’t group the words “white” and “simple” in a cline. It was a stylish kind of white. The slit’s not too high or not too low, the black velvet peep toes, the white and silver clutch, minimal accessories, the brush-up wet look- arghhhh. Purr-fect.

Liza Soberano

WAIT, WOAH. WHO IS THIS GIRL?

The moment I had the chance to look at her pictures during the event, I completely forgot all about the “jologs” Agnes that she portrayed in the previous ABS-CBN teleserye, Forevermore. Her look just blew me away. But then in my second glance, something was running through my mind. I guessed that it was by Micheal Cinco- and it was. Her gown kinda looked like Marian Rivera’s bridal gown, Toni Gonzaga’s Cinderella-inspired gown when she hosted the Binibinang Pilipinas 2014 or Julia Barretto’s debut gown. I don’t know if it’s just because they’re all made by the same designer, but for me, it’s like they all wore the same gown in different colors. There wasn’t an X Factor in this gown, because I felt like somebody wore it before she did (like Marian and Toni). Another issue: her make-up.

What happened to her make-up? She looked 5 years older. I can’t see the typical daring look of Liza. Her brows seem to be too thick and her eyes were very much tainted with a contour shade... I don’t know what went wrong but i know something’s wrong. But anyway, it was still one of the most talked-about looks.

She’s Kim Chiu. She can really rock it. You go girl! No other words. Every year, she’s just one of the icons I look up to in terms of fashion sense, especially in formal events like this. Remember her gown last year made by Patricia Santos? Now, she’s giving justice to Pepsi Herrera’s creation again. Clap, clap, clap.

Angelica Panganiban and Jodi Sta. Maria

How about, Madaam Cladia and Amor Powers?

First off, Madaam Claudia. Let me start by saying, this girl knows what asset to flaunt- the high slit just saved the entire look. But on a darker side, I think that when her designer measured her vital statistics, she was a gym-avid but when the ball came, she already lost her diet- which is evident in the picture. But anyway, not only skinny people can rock it!

I usually get so amazed of her white ensembles in Pangako Sa’yo. White just looks realllyyyy stylish in her. With her SMB look, it went “okay” but I’m in the point where i got stuck in Amor Powers’ style and then I saw her gown, which is not enough for me. It wasn’t good, and it wasn’t bad- I just expected more from her.

Are kids allowed in the ball?!

These 13 year-olds went greaaaaaat! They’re young, still not used to balls and formal events, but it is already a must that they should be invited in this event every year! Bailey’s tux was just merely focusing on color blocking, but it worked and it was appropriate for his age- same case with Ylona. Only a few amount of skin was exposed, but it was still sexy and suitable for a teen like her. They were one of the most adored couples during the event.

KZ Tandingan

I expected her to wear something studded, over accessorized, edgy and pop- but woah. She took it easy and went classy with only a few touches of piercings, and look! The deep reddish lips! It wasn’t a stunning look, but it was a head-turner type of look.

Dawn Zulueta

Look at her. Does she look like she’s already 46?

I’ve always seen Dawn Zulueta as our country’s JLo. Wrinkles beginning to show, age increasing in number, but still getting hotter and hotter. It even makes me think, are their cells not yet tired of reproducing? I wish mine also won’t.

Maja Salvador

Last year’s ball, she walked with her most valuable accessory- her boyfriend, Gerald Anderson. But this year, walking with just earrings and a clutch as accessories made her look more beautiful. I don’t just see a dance princess, but a real princess. Man, this girl really did bloom. Dang, girl!

Coleen Garcia

With her movie, Ex with Benefits, we get to see a different side of Coleen- sexy, free-spirited, liberated. With this gown, I see two different sides: the more dominant is the daring side because the gown is only embroidered with minimal floral finishes, and a little bit of sexy side because of that heart-shaped upper part of the gown that emphasized her cleavage. Not too liberated, not too covered. Just showed off the right amount of skin.

Alex Gonzaga

The Fashion Pulis rated her look as “#1 Worst Dressed”, but for me, it’s just right. It takes so much bravery to wear something different in a ball, and she was one of the gutty ones who would try to experiment new looks in a certain event. Some were even dressed up worse, like:

Ending this blog with Kiray Celis’ balll look. She was ranked #7 Worst Dressed by the Fashion PULIS, but for me, her look worked! If I had this in my closet, It would definitely be one of the favorite pieces.

Again, I’m not a fashion expert and I haven’t been enrolled into a fashion-oriented school or something. I’m just someone who loves fashion and dressing-up, but it is not enough for me to claim that I deeply know what are the do’s and dont’s in the world of fashion. Everything stated was just merely my opinion. ‘Til next ball!
