1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?
Puppy - I really do NOT understand the appeal of this one. Kaiba treats Jou like dirt and Jou absolutely hates it. So what does the fandom do? Have Kaiba make endless horrid dog comparisons and Jou become attracted to him over that??? Why??? Jounouchi deserves better, he deserves better than someone who won’t even give him basic civility, let alone respect, he deserves better than someone whose reaction to his apparent death is “Yuugi get over it and come duel me.”
Tender - Yami Bakura abused his host physically (stabbing him with the Ring, a RPG castle, a knife...) and emotionally (telling him that his friends would die if he didn’t put on the ring and let Yami Bakura take over). I don’t see how this becomes a lovey-dovey relationship where Yami Bakura is protective over regular Bakura. No. Really not the case at all. I mean, I guess I can understand if you like to explore the dynamics of such an abusive situation, but that’s not how I see it written most of the time. Most of the time it’s protective!Yami Bakura.
Yami Malik with anyone - especially Eclipse and Death. He’s not even a complete person. He’s the manifestation of Malik’s childhood trauma. How do you get any kind of romantic relationship out of that, especially with Malik himself?
Mobium - ATEM AND “YAMI” ARE THE SAME ENTITY THE ONLY WAY THIS COULD POSSIBLY WORK IS VIOLATING THE RULES OF THE SPACE-TIME CONTINUUM. Also applies with Monarch and even more so with Sanity
Silent - They...interacted once and Shizuka would hate the way Kaiba treats her brother. I don’t understand how this ship has reasonable popularity.
2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?
I guess Pride? Although I can see that as a one-sided thing on Kaiba’s part.
Yeah, the ones I listed for question 1. Also pretty much any incest ships, any variation of Atem and Yami/Thief Bakura, and any combination of Maliks and Bakuras (except Angst). Also Valon with Mai or Jounouchi because I was not a fan of that love triangle.
6. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?
Yeah, Wish. I love it as a platonic pairing and there was a time I could go “oh yeah that’s cute” as a romantic pairing, but a particular person in fandom has put me off of it as anything except a strictly platonic ship.
Pride is also...starting to get on my nerves a bit with the attitude around it. I’m hoping it doesn’t get ruined for me because it seems like a lot of those shippers also like peach as a companion pairing.
