there was also Smelaya, whose name--ironically--means “Courageous”

like Bolik, she escaped and ran away shortly before her scheduled launch

unlike Bolik, she was located the next day and made her flight

one of my favorite stories about the Soviet space dogs has to be Bolik and ZIB’s though

they trained this dog, named Bolik, to make a suborbital flight, but days before the scheduled launch, he escaped confinement and ran away

just straight up noped out onto the streets of Moscow, never to be seen again

the scientists on the project were like “shit shit shit”

and then they found this other street dog nearby

lured him in with a piece of sausage

and put him in the fucking capsule

and named him ZIB because it was an acronym of a Russian phrase meaning “Substitute for Missing Bolik”

and shot him up into the air even though he wasn’t trained at all

and he did fine
