Put “Run!” in my askbox for a fic of our characters running from something.
"Run!" Part of being a shinobi was tactical retreat, knowing when to fall back, when to advance, how to discern the best place to be in a given situation and how to get there.
Part of it was also knowing when someone else had done all that already and set a trap, and being able to escape from that trap before it snapped shut.
She didn't wait for the young Hyuuga heiress (probably the target of the trap) to respond, instead snatching up her wrist and sprinting out of the small clearing she'd halted in when she first caught a glint of metal in the trees. A mistake on the part of the shinobi who were hunting them, but unfortunately not one made early enough for the escape to be easy.
A kunai slashed through the air, catching a few strands of pink hair. They were quick to react to her escape, obviously, but she wasn't about to let them slam the trap shut messily and still catch her.
"Down!" It was the only warning she could afford to give the younger woman, but she doubted she needed more. The other one had her byakugan active and was hardly a civilian herself. She skidded as she turned on the broken ground of the forest, and launched herself to the right, off of a small cliff they ran alongside. Lower ground wouldn't gain them the advantage back, but she could already see now that she was examining closely (and from this direction) that the trees were rigged with traps in expectation of her attempting to escape the smart way.
Branches and brush whipped at her clothes and skin as they slid downward, channeling chakra into the descent to prevent rolling out of control and hurting themselves in the fall instead.
They hit the softer dirt of the valley below in a roll, and Sakura slammed into a thick trunk. Her chakra cushioned the blow somewhat, but she still felt ribs crack. The impact of the fall necessitated losing grip on Hanabi's hand, so once she had her vision and bearings back, she pushed herself up to look for the other girl. Hanabi, it seemed, had taken the fall better. She had a cut on her calf from one of the sharper rocks, but she was already brushing herself off and standing up.
Sakura shook her head to clear the ringing from it and dragged herself up to her feet, balancing herself against the tree for a moment until she was sure she was steady.
"That bought us a little bit of time, but not much." Even if their pursuers were reckless enough to jump into the thicker brush below at the same speed they had, the enemy ninja would still have to locate them again. And Hanabi would see them coming.
She gestured at the younger girl as she pushed away from the tree and started off at a sprint again. "Come on, this way. There are tunnels a few miles south of here. That'll give us the time to get back to the others before those catch up again."
Once they were with others, at least, there was no way these bandits would risk an open attack again.
More importantly, though...to set up a trap that elaborate in so short a time...how had they known?
