“Why should I? You and Mom never have any faith in me!” she snaps. It’s just her and her dad again in a tiny sleeping capsule with uncomfortable bunks that make her neck hurt and give her headaches and do nothing to give her Mom any rest when she gives her everything to everyone around her and on all these fucking bases that were everything from hidden networks of caves to military complexes to bridge houses precariously suspended between lofty trees.

The base is never all that quiet by virtue of being, you know, a resistance base. A lot of people and assorted beings are up well into the night doing this or that, but there’s still a spot somewhere before sunrise and after the absolute darkest point of the night that’s quieter than most.

Lyn likes that window of silence. She takes the opportunity to get some air without all the hustling that normally pollutes it. She’s not sure if she’s a people person or not, but she’s pretty sure she’s not a people person when they’re all shouting over each other and running around like their lives depend on it.

But then again, they probably do.

She sighs, thinking about this, and wanders down the dark twists of paths and corridors. Vee’s walking next to her, the soft rattle of the crystals in his fur filling up the air in a way that’s about ten times more pleasant than that aforementioned hustling. 

So when Vee stiffens up and then scurries forward suddenly, Lyn doesn’t feel threatened: just tired.

Great. It means there’s someone else around.

And when she hears a voice say “hey, little guy” and she rounds a corner, she sees that older guy - Rel something, she remembers - on his knees, scratching Vee behind the ears. Lyn looks around: they’re close to what passes for their landing bay.

“Isn’t it late to be working?” she asks, leans against a wall with her arms crossed.

Her attempts to compliment the dinner he’d made are thwarted by Ben leaning in to kiss her, and Sigrid isn’t mad about it at all. She grins into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck to supplement it with a hug. “It really is good, though,” she tells him when the kiss breaks, and gives his nose a nudge with her nose. “You’re learning well, little pad-along.” 

He tilts his head in confusion, looking pretty amused. “What’s a pad-along?” It sounds kind of like he thinks it’s some sort of inside joke she’s failed to mention fully to him. 

She laughs. “That Star Wars thing, you’re the one who says it -- the Jedi with their pad-along students?” 

It’s his turn to laugh, but it’s a pained laugh, like he’s trying really hard not to totally nerd out and maintain some semblance of cool (even though they both know he’s totally a nerd and not a cool dude) “Ooooooooh no, noooo no, Sig it’s Padawan. Padawan, not pad-along!” 

Okay that’s not even a real word, is it? (Not that being a real word or not means a whole lot in a science fiction movie that takes place in space...) “Oh!” She flushes a little, but shakes it off, “I always thought you were saying pad-along... you know, like, the students are padding along with the teacher?” She can tell that he’s trying really hard not to embarrass her but that he really wants to laugh more. 

So she leans in, mimicking what he’d said moments ago. “Oh, shut up, I’m trying to kiss you....Nerd.”

She smiles faintly, knowing what he means, and remembering well the times in her life when those around her had assumed that she was too young and inexperienced to be as clever as she was. For a while, it had frustrated her, until Deara had quite wisely suggested that she just use it to her advantage. Use it to watch and learn. Then she had, and it had actually been more effective than she’d initially thought it would be, when she had wanted to immediately and always be taken as seriously as she had thought that being Crown Princess entitled her to be. 

“Let them underestimate you and then prove them wrong,” Breha suggests, handing the young pilot a pack of rations. “Then you’ll always have the element of surprise.”

The alarm on her phone goes off, and Sigrid reaches a hand over to smack it. She rubs her eyes, checking to see if there have been any texts from her dad in the night. He knows where she is, of course, but even so, she checks. There aren’t any texts, and Sigrid hasn’t decided yet if that’s reassuring or if she doesn’t like it. 

The bed feels colder than it had when she’d fallen asleep last night, and that she definitely doesn’t like. But she can smell coffee, and she certainly didn’t make it; she hasn’t even gotten out of bed yet.... Ben knows how to make coffee? 

Then he comes over, and she twists her neck to look over her shoulder towards him; he has a pair of to-go cups in his hands. So that changes the question to: Ben went out to get her coffee? 

“You got me coffee?” 

“You said you have a double shift today and we were... uh... up pretty late last night.” 

It’s true, she does have a double shift, and technically the reason she’d stayed over at Ben’s place is because his apartment is almost half the distance from the hospital than her house, even though that hadn’t actually meant she’d gotten to sleep any earlier than she otherwise would have. 

“You are the best, wow,” she sighs, reaching out an arm towards him. “C’mere...” He obligingly leans over, and she gives him a kiss. 

“I think I love you almost as much as I love coffee...”

 She almost says ‘we could make pizza,’ but stops herself, assessing that the point he’s suggesting is just to be lazy and relax and take a day off. (Plus, even though Sigrid’s been slowly sort of... adding things to Ben’s kitchen cabinets to give him a functioning kitchen supply, she hasn’t tried to add yeast or pizza flour to the mix yet.) She doesn’t usually do nothing all day, or even part of the day, but cuddling isn’t nothing, and cuddling is always good. 

And maybe a day without doing much -- or maybe a morning, she doesn’t really think she’d actually be able to just stay like this all day, however warm and snuggly it is laying curled up together like this -- isn’t a bad idea. 

“Mmkay,” she agrees with a nod, “That sounds kinda nice, yeah.”
