Bad news, worse timing

TMW your retirement plans come crashing down around you...

Today we learned that the Highland Council planning department granted permission for an intrusive development in the fields immediately above us. The young woman that farms the land around us can now build a 50 foot long wooden cabin broadside on to us. She has 69 acres to play with & decided she's going to build just 100 yards or so away. And we're the ones that "don't want a neighbourly relationship".

Of course, she plans to recentre her farming activity around her home and whilst we were happy to live adjacent to farmland, we turned down several houses that were next to farmyards during our search. There is, in our view, a significant difference.

There exists no right of appeal for third parties, so we're stuck with it unless we take it to court on procedural grounds. Reality check. That involves solicitors and huge costs.

My wife is devastated. In one stroke our dreams lie in tatters. So it looks like we'll be back on the market in the New Year. Whilst I love this place, it's what we bought that drew us & not what it'll become.

There's a place for us. One that we can both be happy in. Smaller because this development will almost certainly impact our valuation and because we invested a small fortune that we won't recover in selling so soon. But we might as well take the hit rather than throw good money after bad.

I'm gutted, but we'll just have to pick up the pieces and rebuild. C'est la vie.
