Duty in this darkened corner of space had so far been quiet. Uneventful. Shift after shift gone by and not even so much as a stray rodent to vaporize.

Besides the chittering Russian helmsman.

Once her duty was done, Winters retreived to her quarters. There were almost no personal effects, but she reached under her cot and tugged out an ancient-bound paperback copy of Milton's Paradise Lost and decided to spend some time observing the crew under the guise of recreation, and so she made her way, in black leisure clothing, to the mess hall, and found herself a table tucked back in the corner that was out of the way, quiet. Little risk of being bothered.

And she wasn't. In fact Winters soon found the prose of her novel a little too relaxing. And so she slipped off into vague sleep with her head down on the table. . .
