Because I am an Iowan, I cannot go to the State Fair without running into someone I know and did not expect to see.
The last time I went to the fair with my folks was probably 2015 or 2016. We were sitting outside the Horticulture building (where the Butter Cow is), and I said to my Dad, "OK, let's see if I can make someone we know appear." And Dad responds, "No, make it be someone I know that you don't know."
Not even 15 seconds later, walking out of the Horticulture building is the chaplain from my grandmother's nursing home, a man I had never met, but that Dad knew from visiting his mother. Grandma died in 2013, so he hadn't seen him or even thought of this guy for a few years.
Dad asked me not to do that again.
