Staurothele areolata

This crustose lichen has a cracked and areolate thallus that varies in color from tan to black-brown. It has black or dark-brown perithecia in larger areoles which produce dark-brown, ellipsoid-ovoid, muriform spores. S. areolata grows on rocks near water in temperate and boreal habitats.
