Review: St. Buryan’s newest indie offering ‘Illogical’ bursts with vibrant sounds and a lyrically complicated love-affair
Over the last few years, five-piece St. Buryan have established themselves to be a group wielding a sound both original and sure-to-be arena-filling, blending indie-rock rhythms with pop and pop-punk sensibilities. Making their first release of 2023 with ‘Illogical’ the group continue on from a streak of success that came with their previous offering 'Wait For Me', a track that ended their two-year break from releasing any new music back in September.
Set off with deep bass twangs and groovy percussion, ‘Illogical’ immediately looks to capture a positive, uplifting energy you can’t help but want to dance the night away to. As an infectious electric guitar chimes in too, St. Buryan are here to remind there’s nothing better than a self-assured release with a lot to give, and ‘Illogical’ is here offering all that and more on a plate. The verse slows to more of a padded drum beat, the occasional guitar strum and continued bass, setting up the chorus for an explosive interruption that doesn’t disappoint. Bursting into colour, a catchy electric guitar sets a thrilling tone, complemented by resounding drum beats, percussion and more for one hell of a memorable mix. All of this is topped off by their vocalist’s delivery throughout that drips with a charisma in every word, soaring in higher and lower ranges whilst channeling the most emphatically fitting energy for a track so passionately driven. From their melodic guitar to their engaging evolution, St. Buryan have nailed a release that doesn’t stop giving, and even the bridge has something to give. Switching up the mood to at first just electric guitar strums, a masterful riff and thudding drums, this moment almost feels intimate until it progressively builds into one final chant-along chorus to dig your teeth into. ‘Illogical’ is a little lighthearted, and sure to get you bouncing along in it’s nearing four minute journey.
If it weren’t clear from the title, ‘Illogical’ is all about a romance that doesn’t even remotely seem worth pursuing, and yet even in the early-days our protagonist finds themselves hooked on them anyway. Offering a challenge and handful of cancelled plans, ‘Illogical’ really sets the scene for a partner you’d think would be better left unexplored, but the track continues to pursue: ‘I can’t do this anymore, and could you run that by me one more time? Why can’t this be simple? Can’t get my head around it’. Doused in constant frustrations, let-downs and regrets, lines like ‘why’d I pick up the phone when I saw you calling?’ seem to second-guess their decision making, knowing better of continuing a romance and yet still too transfixed to let it go. Completely self-aware the entire time, ‘Illogical’ is perhaps a release many can find themselves relating to, hoping for someone they’re obsessed with to change and become the rose-tinted vision created in our minds instead of the messy reality. From knowing that they’re ‘making no sense’ to doing it anyway, ‘Illogical’ is a bubbly but confused journey of complicated love, and really what’s more relatable than something telling it how most seem to experience it?
