The blooming onion is a classic steakhouse appetizer that you can now enjoy in a healthier gluten-free form. It's a guilt-free treat for everyone because grilling gives it a smoky flavor and cuts down on the need to fry.
Ingredients: 1 large onion. 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour. 1 teaspoon paprika. 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder. 1/2 teaspoon onion powder. 1/2 teaspoon salt. 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. 2 large eggs. Cooking spray.
Instructions: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat around 375F or 190C. Peel the onion and cut about 1/2 inch off the top. Place the onion, cut-side down, on a cutting board. Starting about 1/2 inch from the root end, make a downward cut, stopping about 1/2 inch from the bottom. Repeat this process all around the onion, creating evenly spaced cuts like petals. In a shallow bowl, mix the gluten-free all-purpose flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. In another shallow bowl, beat the eggs until well combined. Carefully dip the onion into the beaten eggs, making sure to coat it evenly. Next, transfer the coated onion to the flour mixture and gently shake it to coat it with the seasoned flour. Use a spoon to make sure the flour mixture gets into all the cuts. Spray the grill grates with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Place the coated onion on the grill, cut-side down. Grill for about 20-25 minutes, or until the onion is tender and the outer layer is crispy. You may need to turn the onion occasionally to ensure even cooking. Remove the grilled blooming onion from the grill and let it cool slightly before serving. Serve with your favorite gluten-free dipping sauce.
