Now Announcing: 'GEAR UP! Wow, those folks above look animated, don’t they? Check out their garb and weaponry … as well as the passion and raw emotion on their faces. While they look impressive, they certainly don’t have the monopoly on character acting, persona development and crafting within the ‘scene… So with this in mind, we’re announcing our collaboration with SaltCity SteamFest for a new blog feature: “Midweek Immersion – Gear Up!”

At their site (and mirrored here at Steam-Funk), we will be posting weekly updates. We recognize that not everyone is prepared to just ‘jump in’ with both feet into acting, costuming, or crafting, so we want to offer you a helping hand to get started.

Having difficulty getting into character? Struggling with the art of crafting a persona, or curious about the nuances of prop-making/modding? Looking for sources of inspiration? We hear you! And in order to assist you in getting motivated, we will be interviewing some of the biggest names in Steampunk. They will share their know-how regarding: LARP, Persona-Acting, Crafting and the general esprit de corps behind the scenes. This series will feature Convention Chairmen, Authors, Costume, Prop & Weapon Designers and of course, Thespians and LARPers with keen insight into the inner workings of Character Acting.

With each of these seasoned professionals, we’ll discuss where personalities end and personas begin, we’ll explore the elements of the creative process, and we’ll ask for specific insights concerning their works and side projects. We’ll delve into their influences and the techniques they use to properly channel and flesh out their characters and worlds into a living, breathing entities. 

So stay tuned. And in the meantime… Prepare to lace up your corsets, button your waistcoats, fasten your flight jackets, strap on your goggles, and grab your modded arsenal for some proper mayhem.

There's going to be brand new content you've not seen, as well as deconstruction of popular myths and pop culture as we understand it. Define Steam-Funk, what does it mean to you and what should it mean to the world at large?

Defining Steam-Funk is sort of like defining Steampunk. Not to be one of those averse folks who deflect the question, but regardless of whether steampunk began with serious “-punk” elements, the changing and evolving nature of the genre is such that it now contains a great deal of the -punk element which defies definition.

Steam-Funk, to us at Steam-Funk Studios, is a different take on the above, which wraps in not just one but a plethora of different cultural perspectives we find sorely lacking or under-represented within the steampunk movement and brews them together like so much recombinant DNA to create a new vision, built on the backs of its forebears and yet with enough entirely ‘new’ to distinguish itself as unique.

In short, Steam-Funk should be whatever those of us who champion it choose to make of it. With that caveat, to the world at large Steam-Funk should represent an artistic voice that both celebrates the triumphs of our society’s past and chagrins at its collective foibles, but does not choose to ignore them or sweep them under a rug.

Lest some get the wrong idea, the point is to have fun whilst making some pointed statements, but not in an overly preachy way. There are far too many folks in this movement who’ve seized it as an opportunity for a political soap-box. We’d rather entertain while showcasing a series of viewpoints. If our art moves you to feel while you witness it, then we’ve done our job.
