Steddie timeloop au where Steve has tried everything to change what happened and get out of the loop but nothing ever fully works, he never manages to save Eddie and the loops keep happening.

This time he's determined to play everything through like the first time to remind himself how it started and hopefully get some new ideas on how to fix it. (Except for the new hiding place for Erica, where she won't be spotted so Jason never finds them. He's not willing to risk Max)

But when Eddie calls out to him and tells him "Make him pay" after that lengthy dose of eye contact he can't help himself. He steps close, grabs Eddie by the sides of his jacket and pulls him even closer, stares at his lips before looking back into Eddie's eyes. "I will. I promise you, I will."

And while Eddie dot exe stops working for a few seconds he closes up the jacket and adds "And please keep your jacket closed, I have a feeling you might need the extra padding."

Little does he know that this is literally what saves Eddie's life and ends the loop. Sure, he's pretty chewed up but the leather gave just enough protection they can get him to a hospital in time. And when Steve is crashing from the adrenaline and realizes the loop isn't restarting.... he can't help but slap his hand on whatever poor surface is closest and go "The JACKET??!?!? All this time-! And it was the jacket???"

Anyway for a good while Eddie is pretty damn convinced Steve can see visions of the future

There's a sound of breaking glass. And a boy pressed against him. The momentum with which Eddie always shoves him back falters. Stops completely.

Steve doesn't even touch the wall.

Eddie'd dropped the bottle. And his hands are on Steve's face, caressing, touching, feeling.

"Steve."

He doesn't move. Eddie does, though, pulling him into the hug of all hugs, his lithe body shuddering.

He remembers. Eddie remembers.

"You're okay." Eddie breathes. "It restarted. You're okay."

And then Steve's hugging him back. Clutching at Eddie's leather jacket, fingers digging in. Eddie's skin is warm beneath it. His pulse thrumming in his throat, a steady beat against the edge of Steve's nose.

Steve doesn't have to do this loop alone.

"What did it feel like?" Steve asks sometime later, a new day ahead of them both. "Dying, I mean. Being dead."

Eddie pauses, dog-earing the page on his book to look up at Steve. He places it down on the couch beside him, scooting closer to lean his head down against Steve's shoulder.

"Not sure I remember, really." Eddie says. "I think it was dark. Like a big void. I'd be there in the real world and something would hurt, hurt bad, and then it'd just...stop. It'd go dark, and then I'd be slamming you into the wall again."

Steve hums thoughtfully. He'd died a few times, too. But he'd mostly just gone to that in-between place as the loops started up again. "You think that's what waits for us?" Steve asks. "When we do die?"

Eddie's quiet, his hand finding Steve's and lacing their fingers together, bringing it to his lips to press a kiss to his knuckles. "I don't think so," Eddie says finally. "I don't think I was ever really dead."

"I really love you," Steve says, and he hates that his voice breaks. He hates how scared he is, how every pull of his hips feels final.

Eddie seems to get it. Steve's head bows and Eddie kisses his forehead, says it back, lips brushing skin.

Steve fucks him like a prayer or maybe a plea, makes it as holy as he can considering just what they're doing. He kisses the spot where Eddie's heart beats beneath his ribs, holds his cheek in one hand, salty when he drags his tongue gently over.

Steve's not sure he's noticed it before, how well their noses fit together when they kiss.

What else hasn't he noticed?

Will he ever get to?

Steve goes slowly because Eddie's oversensitive, and so he can try to memorize it all.

Eddie's watery breaths. How long and pale his throat is, how pretty it looks bitten purple. The gooey tightness that holds him, how it feels like it might never let him go.

How Eddies lips part with every slow roll of his hips, the moans he feeds him, the candied air they exchange. Eddie tastes like spit and the orange he'd had after dinner. Bright and sweet.

How when Eddie gets close he starts gasping, a litany of sounds from his lips to Steve's, how he comes like it almost hurts him in its intensity, head thrown back and eyes shining.

And after, when Steve cleans up his spend dripping out of him, how Eddie bats him away, too fucked out to even consider the damp cloth.

Eddie just curls around him instead. Tells him he's scared but they'll make it, they have to, because he's never gonna give up a life like this. Steve listens and pulls him closer, tugging the comforter tight around them both.

Fear settles like a blanket. Almost comforting in its familiarity.
