The phone clicks as Eddie sets it back on the cradle, the noise heavier than a phone really has any right to be. His face is blanched bone white.
"I, uh, gotta go," Eddie says.
Steve raises his eyebrows. They're both only half dressed.
"My lawyer," Eddie starts, voice cracking. "Wayne said he's on his way."
"That's fine," Steve says, refusing to match Eddie's pale face to the few facts he has. Eddie's uncle on the other line. The tremor in his gruff voice that Steve's heard in Eddie's, before. Back in March. The way the phone just wouldn't stop ringing. "We just have to get there before him, right?"
Eddie shakes his head. "He's coming to pick up the tapes."
"But—" Steve flounders. "I thought we had another week."
