Thursday, June 3: Steeltower, “Night of the Dog”

West Germany was full of bands like Steeltower in mid ‘80s, and “Night of the Dog” would’ve fit comfortably on a Noise Records sampler from that period.  It was actually Mausoleum that released Night of the Dog in 1984, but same difference, really: the title track was a Priest-inspired barnburner that was all about banging heads and kicking ass.  And on that front, it was quite enjoyable, with an appropriately charging riff, surging drums and wailing that was amateurish but enthusiastic. Sure, there was nothing about this that outshined the bigger bands on the scene, but “Night of the Dog” was still an entertaining heavy metal track and an enjoyable relic from one of metal’s golden ages.
