Steenbeek Albertina Marker, Langemark-Poelkapelle Belgium, December 2018.
The Steenbeek is a stream in West Flanders that crosses the northern half of the Ypres Salient. Artillery shells had shattered the banks of the stream causing the water to flow across the open fields of Flanders creating the quagmire conditions found at Passchednaele in 1917.
British and Belgian troops began their final offensive on September 28 1918, capturing Messines on this day and Passchednaele the next.
