Stefano Guzzetti: Umi
Kokoro, released in 2020 under the Stella Recordings label, is a work of creative maturity by Stefano Guzzetti, who renounces any desire for spectacle in favor of a refined, restrained, and deeply sincere form of emotional expression. The album, inspired by the graphic novel and the Japanese ideogram kokoro (which can be translated as "heart," but also as "spirit" or "center of feeling"), is composed of brief, almost aphoristic pieces, built from sonic fragility and an extreme attention to form.
"Umi", the album’s fourth track, stands out as one of its most personal and narrative fragments. Its short length, simple melody, and linear structure make it a threshold piece: it neither introduces nor concludes, but instead allows passage between two emotional spaces. In this sense, it functions as an interlude of contemplation. The title, meaning “sea” in Japanese, does not translate into sonic grandiosity; the sea Guzzetti evokes is that of memory, of a child’s discovery, of a gaze held still. The inclusion of a short film accompanying the piece reinforces this autobiographical and sensorial dimension, grounding the music in a visual experience that doesn’t illustrate, but rather extends, the tone of the work.
