An open letter to Democrats: You have four years to learn from your mistakes. This was supposed to be your year. You were running against someone who’s own party rejected them. You were running in a country where the tide had turned in your favor. Many of you will not take responsibility for your poor choices leading up to this election, and instead will blame the people who could’ve been your base; true progressives like Bernie Sanders and Jill Stein. In so doing, you will ensure you never gain national power or relevance again. Eight years ago, you won on a promise of change; today you lost the promise for more of the same. Your base should’ve been environmentalists, but you ran a candidate who told #NoDAPL protesters to get a life. Your base should’ve been millenials, but ran a candidate who referred to our entire generation as lazy basement dwelling baristas. Americans supported gay marriage, you gave us a candidate who stood opposed to progress for the LGBT community at every turn. We the people started the #OWS (#OccupyWallStreet) movement, you gave us a candidate of, by, and for the 1%, who kept secret the speeches they were paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to give to Goldman Sachs and the like. We watched #Gasland, and bought #Tesla electric cars and #SolarCity roofs, you gave us a candidate who promised to make fracking the center of their energy policy and took nearly $7 million from big oil. We democratically elected a person who filled sporting stadiums beyond capacity, you gave us someone who hired their friend after resigning in disgrace for maliciously subverting the democratic process in your favor, and then hired them the next day. We wanted single payer, you gave someone who didn’t even want the Affordable Care Act.
