Two Dog Night
Susette was restless. She was not technically assigned a patrol--she never was, this wasn’t her city--but there was little else to do. Her assignment was full of dead ends and road blocks. She was, in a sense, chasing her own tail. Even that would be more fruitful than the past few months.
Patience was beginning to elude her. It was almost funny, the way time worked among mortals. On Home, she might have slept through a year and called it a nap. Here, and everywhere else she had been, time moved so much faster. If she took too long to blink, more people would die.
That made everything so frustrating. The fear, the suspicion, the endless stonewalls, the unfriendly rebuffs. She knew why and she thought she had accepted it. But an especially cold and pointless walk made her feel like she was being ground down from the heels, up.
It was necessary. Until she had a new lead, she had to try and find them, sniff them out. So, she walked, past storefronts and bars, waiting at stoplights, just another pedestrian. She could smell the human from the alien and none of that meant anything. She was alone and aimless in Maroa.
