mark’s verse in drip 😁
man, “to kill the king” is SUCH a good episode
it’s not one of the ones i go back to rewatch again and again, because it’s not like...a fun episode, you know - but it truly is some of the best writing in the series.
this episode is similar, thematically, to ‘the sorcerer’s shadow,’ in that it does actually confront the central conflict of the show, which is not in fact uh-oh someone might find out about merlin’s magic, but rather the cognitive dissonance of merlin choosing to serve a regime that is actively oppressing him. it’s the fact that merlin expends all of his energy taking care of people who literally want to watch him burn.
at the beginning of the show he’s not totally comfortable with that. so we see this conflict popping up again and again in episodes like this one. but then as time goes on, the situation wears him down and down and down until by the time we get to season 5 he has lost all of his hope for changing the world or freeing himself and can literally only focus on ‘MAKE SURE ARTHUR STAYS ALIVE’ because somebody somewhere once told him arthur would be the person who could change things for the better.
like. merlin tells mordred ‘it won’t always be like this. one day we will live in freedom again.’ and i think he does believe that eventually, someday, maybe, that will be the case, for others like him. but i don’t think he expects it for himself anymore.
watching this episode and then going back to the beginning of season 5 is whiplash-inducing. season 1 merlin experiences the deep-rooted conflict he feels in ‘to kill the king’ because at this point he still believes he deserves better than what camelot can give him. season 5 merlin has given up on his own liberation, and i think that is the most tragic fucking progression i’ve ever seen.
This is so cute!!!! Parallel fan chant with art from the awesome Mireykim (who also made this vid)! Ngl, I was singing along XD
Nothing more validating than hearing your old school’s drama club fell apart as soon as you left from a cast mate a year behind you..
It’s canon that Kaltenecker is the beautiful daughter of Lance and Pidge, Sorry I don’t make the rules 😘
Wow, can you guys believe that Plance is canon and they end up adopting a beautiful daughter together??
oooh boy i realized i’m gonna have to head out sometime soon and buy a whole bunch of cheap blankets somewhere before it gets cold and i freeze my ass off trying to sleep :/
