San Diego-based stem cell business Stemgenex is the subject of a suit over allegations about stem cell treatments. The company has now filed a motion to dismiss the case.

HEALTH UPDATE | Testimony from Sandra Pazanin

 This is a patient’s testimony of her experience firsthand after having a cell transplant December, 2010. Sandra Pazanin has been battling a serious and life threatening illness for the last 11 ½ years. On June 8, 2011, she celebrated her six month anniversary of the transplant. These are her experiences after treatment.

Sandra writes “The last 11 ½ years been a journey, but the last six months have been quite an eye opener. I have received approximately 50% improvement in my health. I am EXTREMELY grateful for these results and will have another stem cell transplant later this year. I want to try for 100% improvement.”

“When I first embarked on this journey, I was told that because I have degenerative conditions, and may need transplants annually or bi-annually. Recently, several people have commented on my weight loss. That is actually a reversal of the weight gain caused by increasingly painful, inflammation in my body from my multiple, and aggressive, auto immune conditions.  As the stem cell transplant was working on reducing the inflammation (and thankfully improving my vascular system), the weight started to drop off.”

“I hope that after the second transplant, I will be able to stand and not have to walk out of an event, or room, that is too stuffy or too hot, making it difficult for me to breath. I did not realize until I started to see improvement, just how much my vascular system was shutting down, taking my heart and lungs with it.”

I arranged to do a house exchange with a French couple and will spend 2 months in Provence, celebrating my 64th birthday this year!  AND, I feel as if I have enough improvement in my health to actually enjoy it!”

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Major League Baseball is examining a procedure performed on Yankees right-hander Bartolo Colon last year that involved stem cells being injected into his painful shoulder and elbow, according to The New York Times.

Joseph R. Purita, an orthopedic surgeon in Boca Raton, Fla., told the newspaper he flew to Colon’s native Dominican Republic and helped a team of doctors there with the treatment on the 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner. He said he has used Human Growth Hormone in the procedure before, but not in this case with Colon.

HGH is banned by Major League Baseball.

“The Yankees did notify us and we are looking into it,” league spokesman Pat Courtney told the Times for a story posted on its website on Wednesday night.

Purita said he has treated several professional athletes over the years, including players for the White Sox and Rangers, and the NFL’s Ravens and Dolphins, and has never provided any of them with HGH.

“I just won’t give it to these guys,” Purita told the Times. “I don’t need the stigma and that kind of reputation.”

Colon went 21-8 with a 3.48 ERA for the Angels in 2005, but has been hampered by injuries in recent years. He was released by the White Sox in September 2009 after going 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA in 12 starts.

Bartolo Colon has provided Yankee fans with one of the most interesting stories of 2011. Colon was an elite pitcher up until 2005 with teams such as the Angels and Indians, but he suffered a partially torn rotator cuff in a 2005 playoff game against the Yankees, and he hasn’t pitched a complete season since. When the Yankees signed Colon to a minor-league contract this winter, few of us thought that he’d even make the team. But a funny thing happened: Colon has been pitching effectively for the Yankees. As a starter, Colon has the best xFIP, strikeout rate and walk rate in the starting rotation. Colon is not only pitching well so far, he’s pitching with legitimate major league “stuff”: in his May 2 start against the Tigers, Colon’s four seam fastball averaged 92.8 miles per hour, and peaked at 95.6 miles per hour.

All this from an overweight, soon to be 38 year old pitcher that most of baseball thought was washed up.

Colon’s story got a bit more interesting yesterday, when the New York Times reported that Colon had received a “disputed treatment” in 2010 for his ailing right elbow and shoulder. The “disputed treatment” consisted of the injection of fat and bone marrow stem cells into Colon’s elbow and shoulder. The Yankees did not learn about this treatment until recently; the team has passed what it knows about the treatment on to Major League Baseball. Reportedly, MLB is now “looking into” the treatment.

Even though the world failed to end as predicted on May 21st, it appears now the stars are in a positive alignment. In the last 48 hours, the NHL has returned to Winnipeg, the Vancouver Canucks beat the Boston Bruins 1-0 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals by scoring with 19 seconds left in the game, and my 8 year old son’s soccer/football team (the Black Knights) whom I coach won 5-2. Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket.
