Stenocactus violaciflorus

We received this plant as Stenocactus violaciflorus, but this name is no longer an accepted one. Unfortunately, the 2 large cactus reference books disagree on what it should be referred to - either Stenocactus obvallatus (from east-central Mexico) or Stenocactus crispatus, from a little farther south. It has the wavy ribs characteristic of its genus, and impressively long spines! Stenocactus are generally early-flowering, often starting before the spring equinox.

I finally found Stenocactus multicostatus again locally! Told myself I’d buy it if I saw it again, soooo…

Stenocactus multicostatus (syn Echinofossulocactus multicostatus) is native to Mexico.
