Stephen Pile, The return of the heroic failures (1989)

William McGonagall’s first stage appearance was as Macbeth at Mr Giles’s Theatre in Dundee. Realizing what a talent McGonagall had, Mr Giles said that he could only appear if a large sum of money was paid to the theatre in cash before the performance.

McGonagall said he considered this “rather hard”, but his fellow workers at the Seafield Handloom Works in Dundee had a whip round. They had heard him reciting Shakespeare at work, in his own unique way, and were keen to see him turned loose amidst professional actors.

“When the great night arrived,” McGonagall wrote in his diary, “my shopmates were in high glee with the hope of getting a Shakespearian treat from me. And I can assure you, without boasting, they were not disappointed.”

When he appeared on stage, he was received with a perfect storm of applause. When he uttered his first line – “So foul and fair a day I have not seen” – there was a deafening ovation.

The high spot came in the final scene, when Macduff is supposed to kill Macbeth in a sword fight. Unwisely, the actor playing Macduff told McGonagall to “cut it short”.

Suspecting that the actor was jealous of the acclaim he was receiving, McGonagall refused to die. A new ending to ‘Macbeth’ seemed imminent.

“I continued the combat until he was fairly exhausted, and there was one old gentleman in the audience cried out: “Well done, McGonagall! Walk into him!” And so I did until he (Macduff) was in great rage, and stamped his foot, and cried out “Fool! why don’t you fall?” And when I did fall, the cry was “McGonagall! McGonagall! Bring him out! Bring him out!” Until I had to come out and receive an ovation from the audience.”

[Book review] The Ultimate Book of Heroic Failure by Stephen Pile

Genre: Nonfiction, humor, history

Summary from the book: Anyone can be success, but it takes real and original genius to foul up big time. Stephen Pile, President of the Not Terribly Good Club of Great Britain and author of The Book of Heroic Failures, return after the quarter of a century’s intensive study to celebrate the immortals in the field of getting wrong.

My view on this book: When I saw this book on the shelf (as I randomly browse the shelf), it caught my eyes that it is a book about heroes. And then, the word of failure hits me! I guess it is quiet interesting as I never read any kind of this book before.

It is really surprise me that the book is very unexpected. When the author said it is about Heroic Failure, he is not kidding. Most of the books I read always emphasize on our positive vibe, the good thing can happened to us.  While this book is the opposite of it.

The failure covers almost everything that I can think of. From the least successful bank robbery to least successful pageant. From sport to animal. My personal favourite is ‘The Least Successful Getaway’ which is about the escaping prisoner, who was a car thief started hitching a lift with M6. As his decide to stop a motorist, turn out the rider was a prison officer. I laugh very hard at that part. It is so unbelievable!

This book really made me wondering, how on earth the author collect the information? Or is he laugh every time he wrote this book? Did he give up when he read all the information he get? So many question on my mind every time I read this book.

Every chapter will start with a quote, which also quite hilarious. My personal favourite is:

    “What are you working on?”     “I’m preparing my next mistake.”     By Bertolt Brecht from Stories of Mr Keuner

However, this quote I will held in my heart, which is ‘Good people are good because they have come to wisdom through life’ by William Saroyan, who is an Armenian-America writer. Thank you for your wisdom.

There is also section of The Art of Being Wrong which I like as it is a short conversation as people blindly reject someone or said something wrong. For example, when modelling agency said Marilyn Monroe better be learning secretarial skill or get married and Margaret Thatcher confidently said no women at least in her time will become prime minister. Tragic...

This book made me look at the different side of everything. We always want to look at the good and positive side, however, we sometime forget that we also need to embrace the bad and negative side of us. This book also made me feels good in a very strange way.

And the quote at every chapter really made my mood!

How good this book?: 3.5/5

It is worth to read/buy?: Personally, if you stumble with this book at the library or maybe a friend has this book, I suggest for you better to borrow this book rather that buy it. I bought it since I got a good deal at the sale. Maybe, I will give my junior who also loves to read as much as I do for her light reading.
