Luke Young (Central Midfield)
The 21-year-old playmaker signed for The Gulls this summer from Devon rivals Plymouth Argyle and is set to shoulder a considerable weight of expectation from everyone at the club as this signing has been hailed as a massive coup from manager Chris Hargreaves.
Such is the expected importance of Young to the manager’s plans; Hargreaves even stated he wanted to run on to the pitch himself with a stretcher to help Young up when he went down with an injury during pre-season.
Young’s release from The Pilgrims surprised many and the young player already has considerable Football League experience to his name; making over 100 appearances since emerging from their youth ranks in 2011.
The Ivybridge-born player is having to deal with the mantle of being labelled as the “new Eunan O’Kane” but it is a pressure that Young should thrive on; as successive managers have been quick to praise Young’s speed-of-thought and passing range.
The man being tasked with improving the “goals for” tally this season is sure to be front man Ryan Bowman; who has joined the Gulls from York City on a two-year deal.
The 22-year-old target man only moved to York last summer for a fee believed to be close to £20,000 but has left the club after just one season with 8 goals from 37 appearances in League Two last campaign.
While that may seem like a paltry return for the striker, Bowman does have a record of scoring regularly in the conference, and his age means he is only going to improve with minutes on the pitch. The 6’2” forward has previous experience in the Conference and scored 15 goals for Hereford in the 2012/13 campaign, and 10 the season before for Darlington.United’s squad has been devoid of a regular target man threat since Rene Howe so Bowman’s arrival fills a vital need in the current squad.
A player who can play on either flank or through the middle, Briscoe is a man of versatility who is sure to feature regularly under Hargreaves’ management this season. The 26-year-old wide man started his career at Port Vale but failed to ultimately make the grade at the then-League One club. Briscoe dropped right out of professional football and suffered a nomadic existence for the next couple of seasons, turning out for many non-league sides including Leek Town, Hendesford Town and Stafford Rangers. Briscoe was then given his second stab at professional football at Manfield Town in the conference and he didn’t miss his chance. The pacey winger played over 150 times for The Stags and 42 times in the season that ultimately saw the club promoted back to the Football League.
Promotion to the fourth tier of English football was somewhat bittersweet for Briscoe, however. The Burton-born player only played a further two times for Mansfield since their return to the Football League and even went out on loan to Nuneaton Town last season in a bid to get more football. Briscoe was unsurprisingly released this summer and snapped up by Torquay and is sure to be keen to show he can do a job in the Football League in the near future.
A wide-man with genuine pace is once again going to be prowling the wings at Plainmoor.Ajala signed a one-year deal this summer following his release from Bristol City where he made just two substitute appearances in his two years at Ashton Gate. He also had loan spells at several clubs, including Welling and AFC Wimbledon. The London-born winger will be a familiar face to some fans at United, as Ajala impressed immensely against Torquay as Wimbledon secured a vital win on New Year’s Day 2013 to aid their survival hopes.
Ajala was initially brought to TQ1 on trial but did enough in early pre-season games to convince Hargreaves that he was the man who could bring some excitement back to the club. His pace and trickery is likely to be crucial for United breaking down stubborn opposition defences. A good delivery from these wide players is a must if Bowman is to be prolific this season.
Angus Macdonald (Centre Back)
Macdonald is a man who most of the Plainmoor faithful are sure to be familiar with. The former Reading youngster has already had two loan spells at the club but this time returns to the side on a permanent basis; signing a one-year deal. The 6ft centre back signed for Salisbury City following his release from Reading last summer and played 26 times for The Whites as they finished a comfortable 12th in the conference. However, the club was then expelled from the league due to unpaid debts and Macdonald found himself again looking for employment.
The 21-year-old made the most appearances he ever has in competitive football last season and will be certain to be keen on continuing his fledgling career with a regular starting birth at United. Macdonald’s impressive performances last season also earned him a call-up to the England C team.
Jordan Seabright (Goalkeeper)
The former Bournemouth youngster will be in competition with Martin Rice for the number one shirt next season after signing a one-year deal at Plainmoor.
Seabright left Bournemouth without making an appearance and signed for Dagenham & Redbridge in the summer of 2012. The Dorset-born youngster made eight appearances over two years for The Daggers and he will want to arrest his descent down the footballing pyramid and secure a future in professional football with his spell at Torquay. Whether he can take that starting spot from Martin Rice, however, remains to be seen.
Duane Ofori-Acheampong (Striker)
Thank goodness for shortened names; I couldn’t have typed Ofori-Acheampong more than once – that being his full name. O’Archie joins The Gulls on a one-year deal and stands at over 6’3” which will surely provide an alternative aerial threat to the poaching abilities of Elliot Benyon and Ashley Yeoman. The 21-year-old front man failed to make an appearance as he rose through the youth ranks at Southend and joins United following a successful trial at the club. The lanky forward is expected to start the season from the bench but will be undoubtedly pushing for a place in the starting line up in the near future.
Courtney Richards (Central Midfield)
The biggest compliment that can be paid to former Brighton player Richards is that as Torquay try to trim their wage bill – Chris Hargreaves remained compelled to offer the central midfielder a two-year deal after an impressive pre-season trial at the club.In a time of uncertainty about the playing staff wage bill Hargreaves felt the ability of Richards meant he had to be tied down to a two year deal.
At just 20 years of age Torquay fans have begun optimistically dreaming of a Luke Young – Courtney Richards partnership blossoming at Plainmoor over the next few years. And while that may be a mouth-watering prospect, fans will do well to remember that too much pressure on young shoulders can sometimes be a burden. Just ask Freddy Adu.
