Birds have a gland at the base of their tail called the uropygial gland, which secretes an oil that keeps their feathers clean and waterproof. The water droplets sit perfectly on top of the feathers of this steppe eagle without soaking them.

November 10, 2023 - Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis) These booted eagles breed in open steppe and semi-desert scrubland across much of central Asia, and winter in parts of southern Asia, the Middle East, and eastern and southern Africa. They hunt small mammals, as well as birds, reptiles, and insects. Breeding from April to June, they build large platform nests from sticks lined with twigs, feathers, and other materials. In Mongolia some nests are constructed almost entirely of bones. Pairs usually nest on the ground but recent habitat changes have led to more nests being built on trees, bushes, and other elevated locations. They are classified as Endangered by the IUCN due primarily to habitat loss caused by agriculture and are also at risk from frequent collisions with power lines.

I have zero clue how to draw gryphons but here are some reference images for the animals that resemble my gryphon OC, Sabr

The steppe eagle, Indian leopard and Himalayan snow leopard, all of which are native to Kashmir and the surrounding regions. I always pictured Sabr having green eyes and being about the same size as a 5’ tall horse. He’s the main character of a small side project I have which is basically a love letter to Kashmir. I hope and pray that, like Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Syria, Ukraine and all regions currently trapped by genocide and occupation, Kashmir will be free. 🤲
