i really love tommy and dristas dynamic in steps and I wanna expand on ranboos character more since im not the craziest fan of them anyway? but steps ranboo has a special place in my heart and I wanna give them the love they deserve

steps is a vigilante hero au esc story that focuses on tommy, tubbo, ranboo, purpled and drista being vigilantes ! their city suddenly becomes infected with the red vines, and they have to work together to get rid of the infestation before the city is destroyed!
the red vines storyline is different from how it is in the dsmp as well! this time having not bad being the main leader of sorts- but eryn instead!
ive already got chapter 1 all written out, and the majority of the rest of the story is also mostly planned, so i just have to write it ! when I do I fully intend on posting it to ao3, so pls lmk if this sounds interesting to you :D id love to talk more about it if anyone is curious :]

and theres so much id love to say about steps! but some of it will be spoiler territory, so I'll just pick out what I can !
bunch of yapping below the cut :]
i can talk about some backstory stuff for our characters since it wont necessarily ever be present in story, so here's some fun context for a couple guys !
dream and drista are siblings (duh) but drista LOATHES her brother. doesnt even call him her brother. dream is the BIGGEST villain in Golde City and drista resents him very much for that reason.
before she became a vigilante, she was actually a villain with her brother and the rest of the dteam! she didnt hurt anyone or anything like that, but she did cause some destruction and chaos while she was part of the team.
now, a little bit of a pivot- punz and purpled are siblings too! they come from a LONG family history of mercenaries and assassins, so when purpled was young, punz took them out of there and they lived on their own!
money is hard to come by tho, yk? and punz was trying their best really, but they could only do so much before they had to resort to the one thing they escaped home from; mercenary work.
punz hid this from purpled for a long long time, simply telling him that their job had weird hours and that they had to work long nights in order to make enough money for the apartment.
now! back to the dteam- while theyre big time villains, they never liked the idea of getting their hands dirty with murder, so they hire someone to do it for them. aka punz!
punz is the dteams official mercenary, working for lots of money to kill people that tick them off just a little too much.
and so all of this brings us to the fateful night all our vigilantes came together!
the dteam + drista were out one night and came across our three vigilantes (tommy tubbo and ranboo at the time) dream HATES these guys. just. so much. and when they all started fighting each other, it really seemed like he could've killed them right there
all the while, punz is out on another job. purpled has had enough of listening to punz' vague stories about this mystery job, so he follows them out. during punz' job stuff goes ary, and the knife they were going to use to kill the target was thrown out of reach, so purpled has to make the impossibly hard decision of killing a random stranger in order to save their brother.
purpled runs, doesnt look back. drista is acutely aware that her brother very well could hurt these kids bad, so shes actively trying to stop him.
tommys in a bad spot, dream still fighting, then! a portal swoops tommy away into the safety of somewhere out of distance.
and its purpled! purpled with blood stained clothes and hands and tear streaks down their face who just saved tommys life.
so thats basically when our vigilantes become the little group they are! purpled is added almost immediately after that night, and drista finds the guys at school and tells them everything; from how dream is her brother and she was there and that shes sorry for what happened. she wants to do better so she asks to join their vigilante group, and they dont decline!

fun fact to end this off with- steps was actually created about four years ago! back in 2022! the original story had lots of plot holes and random aspects that held no meaning, so ive decided to rewrite it completely as a sort of passion project :] (the old name used to be 1 step forward 5 steps back)
