What is an accent and an idiolect? Although we intuitively know what an accent is, there is more to it than just a way that people sound in different parts of the country. Idiolects are the speech habits unique to a particular person. Both accents and idiolects have social and cultural components with implications in linguistic bias and stereotyped perceptions. Listeners extract relevant social information from phonological, syntactical, and lexical speech cues in a process that influences stereotyped perceptions of speakers.
