What’s the funniest part of your personal way of talking (unique words or sounds from the way you or your personal group of people speak)?

I’ll go first

For some reason, when I’m talking v informally, I drop all y and w sounds between vowels. No one else around me does this, I do not know how I started to do this besides that I watch a lot of foreign tv and YouTube and my linguistics major ass tends to notice these things and repeat them for fun until they sound normal to me

So like most words just sound a little funny like towel sounds more like /tal/ and mayor sounds like /mer/

But my favorite (mostly because of how much it annoys my mom) is boil to /bol/ so whenever I say I’m gonna boil the water it sounds like I’m gonna go bowling with water

STUPID LINGUISTICS IDEA I JUST HAD:

What if there was a word idioetymology; and it studies how words/ variations of words/ new meaning of words/ new concepts evolve and form on a personal level and immediate interpersonal level, be it ones unique to the person amongst oneself, or even the unique words and concepts the one is part of creating and giving meaning among family/ friends/ fandoms/ related to inside jokes..etc.

And what if it also includes when more common words, get assigned unique meaning or signifcance developed by the person through life experiences and influences.

I AM NOT A LINGUIST NOR AM I AN EXPERT IN ANYTHING RELATED TO THE FEILD. I know this probably is already studied and thought of in some way by someone more knowledgeable and smarter, But I just enjoy thinking about it lol.

Examples of non-standard syntax in my Peruvian Spanish idiolect

As compiled over a span of a few months (on parenthesis, what my interlocutor said before or situational context)

Ha dicho más algo Cami?

Ese lugar conoces?

Al cine has ido?

(Mamá: el cuarto ya está listo) Ah verdad, sacaste las cajas creo tú no? Gracias

(Mamá: Sí, he comido el pollo de Popeyes) Picante te pareció seguro no?

Bien pedida eres Ma! (Porque la llaman al celular varias veces en un ratito)

(Papá: mozzarella no se pone en pasta) Rico debe ser igual

(Prima: Quieren ir al cine a ver Wicked o Gladiator?) Gladiator quiero ver

Fácil algo cansada el agua (About the water in pet snake's enclosure being perhaps a bit stagnated)

For reference, these are more standard alternatives (besides lax punctuation and maintaining colloquial vocab)

¹ (adverb) colloquialism meaning muy and bastante

² (adjectival adverb) colloquialism meaning tal vez and quizás

³ cansada isn't a colloquialism, I just forgot the word estancada 😂

I’ve coined the term “philiolect”, from greek philía, “friendship,” to denote a language variety used by two particular individuals specifically within the context of their relationship.

For example my & my bf’s philiolect is based on a Polish substrate with a fair share of toki pona, Latin and Dutch vocabulary, grammatical and morphological borrowings from Ukrainian, Proto-Slavic and Polish Sign Language, and constant attempts to introduce noun incorporation into a boring-ass Standard Average European syntax.

My accent in English has a feature that is probably influenced by my native language, Danish. By default I devoice all voiced stops and fricatives at the end of words. This means pairs of words like "horse/whores" and "course/cores" where the second word typically has more of a Z sound at the end, is S in my case.

You'd think this means that these sets of words sound identical, right? they're not. because my weird ass accent has a fully fledged vowel length system (probably as compensation)

course is /koɹs/ meanwhile cores is /koːɹs/ with a long o!

I've had people not be able to tell when I say write vs ride /ɹɐɪʔ/ vs /ɹɐːɪt̚/ (probably because ʔ and unreleased T sounds the same to untrained ears

my wackiest pair (actually trio) of words is horse/whores/horrors

these come out as /hoɹs/ /hoːɹs/ /hoɹːs/

a long R! what!

weird post but i LOVE getting to know someone enough to learn their idiolect. Like. What little quirks of speech they have. What filler words they use. Where they choose to pause, what they choose to enunciate, how they exhibit tone.

When editing my podcast episodes i really notice how much any given person uses certain phrases -- everyone's got those words or phrases they use more frequently than they themselves might even notice (things like "you know" and "awesome" and stuff).

i used to kind of cringe at my own side of an episode -- ("I really say 'absolutely' that much???" "when did i start ending so many of my sentences with 'if that makes sense'???") -- but now i just kinda smile.

it's cool to think you can get to know a person so well you might be able to tell if a sentence really feels like they wrote or said it, ya know? Because you're so familiar with what words and phrases they tend to use, which ones they never use, and the like. And you can think about why they (subconsciously, most likely) have selected which phrases they have to become staples in their idiolect. Where does culture or region come in? What about what they value in a conversation or relationship? Any underlying anxieties or hopes that they themselves possibly don't even think about too often?
