The Color Monster: A Pop-Up Book of Feelings
We teach toddlers to identify colors, numbers, shapes, and letters—but what about their feelings? By illustrating such common emotions as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and calm, this sensitive book gently encourages young children to open up with parents, teachers, and daycare providers. And kids will LOVE the bright illustrations and amazing 3-D pop-ups on every page!
My thoughts: Pop-up books are tricky in libraries and classrooms, since the tendency is great for damaging books, but I wanted to feature The Color Monster because I endorse the premise of identifying and naming feelings for small children. It is certainly true that we as parents tend to focus on many typical aspects of learning, without the same multitude of resources to help children grasp the concepts of their emotional intelligence, as there are for letters, numbers, and animals. With this book, children have a simple, visual means of beginning the process of understanding the emotions they experience.
"The color monster is feeling mixed up, but he doesn't understand why."
You've jumbled up all of your emotions--and all of your colors, too!
This is happiness. It shines yellow like the sun and twinkles like the stars. When you're happy you laugh, jump, dance, and play. You want to share that feeling with everyone!
This is sadness. It's gentle and blue like a rainy day. When you're sad you might want to cry or be alone.
Anger blazes bright red, and fear hides in the black shadows. Green is calm, and when one is calm, one feels peace. Feelings are easier to understand when they are not mixed up together. A spread in the book features jars with names for these emotions, with a tab to lift that reveals the colors of the emotions. While this is an over simplification of feelings and color associations, it is a beginning that leads to understanding, conversation, verbalization and externalizing the internal world of children, giving them a foundation upon which to build a growing understanding of themselves.
But . . . wait. There's one feeling left over. What could it be?
