There’s something inherently fun about making hooks out of nails.  Most folks think to simply pound a nail into the wall to act as a hook, but I like going a few steps beyond that. The big nail hooks start life as 12″ landscaping nails and are perfect for around the shop, garage, man cave or whatever comes to mind.  The locals around here seem to love them because they’re perfect for holding a Stetson.  I’ve seen them used for storing ladders, kayaks, extension cords.... and heavy winter coats. The smaller hooks are great for making little racks to organize those little things like leashes, keys, and coffee mugs.

Rest in peace, John Batterson Stetson.  Born in New Jersey, Stetson was working for his hatter father in his youth when he was diagnosed with consumption and told he had only a short time to live--so, naturally, he traveled Out West to see the country before it was too late, and while doing so turned his hatter eye to the ubiquitous (and, it should be noted, almost universally flea-ridden) coonskin hats worn by Westerners.  When he returned East, he set out designing a more suitable hat for cowboys/ranchers/bullwhackers/drovers, eventually manufacturing a number of designs of what would come to be called Stetsons--the world’s first cowboy hats.  The consumption did not get him as a youth after all--he died on this date in 1906 at the age of 75, after having given most of his considerable wealth away to found schools, universities, homeless shelters, and other charitable endeavors (including providing almost unprecedented benefits for his employees).  We take our hats off to you, Mr. Stetson.

Had myself a little double-take today when I walked by this poster and realized that as of this Summer, it will have been ten years since my first tour with the Calgary Stetson Showband. 😱 I've grown, moved, changed the direction of my life in ways I never imagined way back when I stood in that stadium in Kuala Lumpur. And yet, in a lot of ways, the changes I have brought upon my own life were directly influenced by the things I learned and experienced with the Bands Of Calgary.
