Context: this is based on the lyrics of Naughty from Matilda the Musical (the link is to a live performance but I like it). 🎼

Sometimes You Have to be a Little Bit Naughty is just an adorable and colourful book. 😊 The copy I have has little cutouts forming open doors on both the front and back. Kinda fitting our guide and companion through the story a punkish mouse 🐭 Our little guide gives me serious Minchin vibes. It's as much the attitude as the outfit and hair. 🎶 That said the cameo from Tim Minchin is perfect. Steve Antony has made some illustrating choices that respect Minchin's Australian nationality. This includes using Australian animals for some of the fictional characters, such as 🐨for Jack and Jill and Platypi for Romeo and Juliet a couple of others. I like the choice to leave Humpty Dumpty as is. 🥚Of course Goldilocks is a cat. 😸 What else is she going to be? Having Cinderella be almost her exact opposite in animal form 🦏 feels like a smart choice. My inner 📒🐲 (book dragon) was delighted with the appearance of the dragon in the book.

This all culminates in a joyous celebration of fairytales and owning your life and your choices. There are some kids that will certainly take great joy out of this. Boys and reluctant readers in particular. I can see this being a fantastic read to, I can see some fun activities a creative individual could create from it.

This is from a book called Please Mr Panda where after asking different animals if they would like a donut a panda says he has changed his mind and doesn’t give them any. Eventually he meets an animal who says “please” and gives them a donut. It’s a well intentioned book but I would be cautious reading it to someone who is not neural typical and has difficulty with social situations.

I question the message in this book as it doesn’t consider that the other animals might not have learned to say “please” or they might come from a culture where hospitality differs from ours when offering food. The panda might come across as a jerk to a child who has autism, special needs, or other challenges with understanding social situations, anxiety about food, and things being offered then taken away from them.
