Mostly Mezzo Mondays: Genaux (x2), Sampson, Rice, and Connolly

Mostly Mezzo Mondays: a recurring (though not weekly) feature where, on Monday nights, I blog a list of the upcoming broadcasts that have caught my eye on World Concert Hall. My interests: baroque vocal music, art song recitals, and a list of favorite singers.

Vivica Genaux and Valer Sabadus sing a selection of baroque “scenes and arias” in a concert with the Academia Montis Regalis recorded earlier this year. Saturday, December 1 on Kulturradio-RBB.

Brit favorites Carolyn Sampson and Christine Rice are among the soloists for the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Live broadcast scheduled for Saturday, December 1 on WCRB. NOTE: Although the broadcast starts at 7:30 p.m. on December 1 local (Boston) time, it is listed in the wee hours of December 2 on World Concert Hall, which expresses all times in GMT.

Vivica Genaux stars in the Pinchgut Opera production of Hasse’s Artaserse along with David Hansen, Carlo Vistoli, et al. Sunday, December 2 on ABC Classic FM. (Note that because this show is being broadcast from Australia, the start time falls in the morning in Europe and in the middle of the night in the Americas.)

Laura Aikin, Sarah Connolly, Steve Davislim, and Hanno Müller-Brachmann are the soloists in a performance of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Le Concert Olympique. The concert was recorded November 21 in Antwerp. Deferred broadcast Monday, December 3 on Klara.

Listen on demand: Beethoven Missa Solemnis with Sarah Connolly et al.

Sarahfans, Connollyphiles, Connoisseurs, etc: in case you missed it, last week’s broadcast of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Dame Sarah among the soloists is still available for listening on demand, on the Deutschlandfunk Kultur website. Go here and click HÖREN in the lower right corner of Beethoven’s picture; a tiny audio player interface will open in the upper right of the screen. The concert recording is prefaced by about 22 minutes of chit-chat in German, so you may want to click ahead on the audio player bar to skip to the music.

Alternatively, you can find this concert by going back to its broadcast date, April 28, in the Mediathek on the Deutschlandfunk Kultur site. To skip the lengthy introductory chit-chat, you want the listing that says “KONZERT Musik.”

The performers are Le Concert Olympique and the Arnold Schoenberg Chor with vocal soloists Laura Aikin (not Malin Hartelius, as mistakenly listed by some sources), Sarah Connolly, Steve Davislim, and Hanno Müller-Brachmann, all conducted by Jan Caeyers. They all sound glorious.

Nerdy aside: although this broadcast was listed in advance as a recording of the November 23, 2018 performance in Berlin (as relayed on World Concert Hall, which generally reprints the information published in advance by radio stations), the written and spoken information now available from Deutschlandfunk Kultur specify that it is actually a recording of the same group’s performance at deSingel in Antwerp on November 21, 2018—a performance previously broadcast on Belgian radio station Klara.

Better Know a Bach Soloist: Steve Davislim

Australian tenor Steve Davislim made his Philharmonic debut in 2011's performances of Handel's Messiah, when The New York Times praised his "uniformly superb" performance. He returns from a land Down Under this week to be a man at work in Bach's Mass in B minor, conducted by Alan Gilbert.

Between then and now, Steve has been busy on concert stages from Melbourne to London, Berlin, and Bach's own town of Leipzig, singing works ranging from Beethoven's Ninth to Schubert's Lazarus and Dvořák's Stabat Mater. (He also keeps busy in opera with roles like Tamino in The Magic Flute and Titus in La clemenza di Tito.) Bach is also a staple in his repertoire, as you can year above in a recording with John Eliot Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists. Welcome back, Steve!
