It was odd when Dustin came home one day saying, “Sis! You'll never guess who I became friends with!” When you just raised an eyebrow he practically screamed, “Steve Harrington!” Steve Harrington. The so-called “king” of Hawkins High. You never questioned it, just went with his flow.
That was four years ago. Dustin is now best friends with Steve. You and Steve are the same age and fought together to kill Vecna. I mean yeah, he was hot, but you never realized how much you liked Steve for his personality, not his looks. You and Steve are pretty good friends, you just kinda.. clicked. Robin, your best friend, ships you and Steve together so often it drives you crazy.
But you were so scared of ruining the great friendship you had with Steve that you pushed him away. You used to talk for hours on end, now you barely say a word when you guys are talking. You used to cuddle on his couch and watch a movie, now you make up excuses to not see him. You hope and pray he doesn't notice, but he does. He notices to the point where he wants to talk to Dustin wondering what he did wrong. He thinks he's the reason.
Eventually, he's fed up with sitting around and he knocks on your door. You, expecting Robin, opens the door to be met with Steve's face. You quickly try to shut the door, but he puts his hand firmly on it, “You’re not running anymore Henderson. What’s wrong? Is it something I did? What did I do? I miss you, and I'll do just about anything to get you back," he's a little harsh, harsher than he intended.
His words hurt, and you bite your lip trying to hide your emotions. He sighs, “look I didn't mean to be that harsh, I just.. I'm worried about you. Dustin is too, and Robin won't tell us shit,” you can see the concerned look in his eyes. It hurts down to your bones, knowing he thinks it’s all his fault.
You want to just give up, scream “I love you!” until your lungs give out. You’re just too scared. “Steve, I-” his face falls, you called him Steve, not Stevie, or bestie, he doesn’t even care if you call him girl, which you do sometimes.
“Okay what in the actual world is going on with you? Why did you call me Steve? Is it actually something I did? Just tell me, I promise I can fix it!” The pure and undying desperation is his voice takes a bite out of your soul.
“You didn’t do anything I just-” in your head you're screaming to tell him but don’t know how.
“Then just tell me! You’ve been scaring me and Dustin for two weeks now! I don't know what to do with myself anymore!” he takes your hand in his large, warm, actually no, sweating, hand.
On instinct you comment on his sweaty hand, something you always complained about when you’d hold his hand. “Your hands are clammy..” You whisper, your voice barely audible, but he hears it. A short, humorless laugh comes from Steve.
“Well it’s good to know that you can still complain,” he teases back lightly before getting back onto the subject. “But seriously, why are you being so weird? I mean, you're weird normally, but right now you're more weird than normal and-” You almost laugh at his rambling, a nervous habit of his. His fingers are absentmindedly twisting the rings on your fingers, another nervous habit he has that you love. You look down at your hands in his, then back up at his desperate face.
He keeps rambling, begging you to tell him what’s going on. You finally give up, snapping. “I love you, Steve!” You yell the words at him, shouting over him, and he stops. Looking into your eyes as if he doesn’t believe you. As if you just flat out lied to his face.
“What?” His voice cracks and trembles at the same time. “Y- you love me?” Ever since his “King Steve” era ended, Steve has been self-conscious. He can’t flirt like he used to, he can’t be a cool guy anymore, and it really hurts him. But now he’s better, he’s more calm, patient, caring, careful, kind, everything he wasn’t in high school. It sucks for him, he can’t pull women as easily, all the girls want a hot, outstanding, and loud dude. You want Steve and everything he is. Now, if you were asked about Steve Harrington four years ago, you would have laughed and called him an asshole, because that's what he was. Key word: was.
“I was scared of ruining our friendship,” the words you’ve been keeping locked tight in the dungeon in your heart, spill out. They come fast and blunt, just needing to escape. So, he listens as you spill your heart right into his hands. “I was terrified that you would keep me in the friend-zone, so I kept quiet. I thought keeping my feelings buried down inside would make it better, that they would go away. But they didn’t. They got so strong that just seeing you made me want to jump into your arms, kiss you, hug you, touch your annoyingly perfect hair, anything to get closer. I hated them so I started pushing you away instead, thinking that would help. It only hurt worse. I told Robin everything which is why she wouldn’t tell you, or Dustin. I asked her not to.”
The words hit him all at once. Shock, joy, confusion, and something you can’t quite place crosses on his face all at once. “That’s- but why did you think pushing me away would make it better?” His words hurt. You don’t know how to explain your thought process. “Just know that I feel the same. I was slowly dissolving when you started to disappear. It almost killed me when I didn’t get my daily dose of your weirdness,” his attempt at a bit of humor works, drawing a small, blushy giggle from you.
He leans down, his nose almost touching yours. “Promise me you will never leave like that again,” he whispers the words like they could shatter from the cool breeze, forming from the sun going down.
“I promise,” you say firmly, playfully holding out your pinky finger in-between both of you. A childish move, but completely you at the same time. He laughs softly before hooking his pinky with yours.
“You can be such a child sometimes, y’know that?” he grins as he speaks, his words light and kind.
“Shut up, Stevie.”
The relief that washes over his face at hearing his deemed nickname fall from your lips, is almost comical. “Finally, back to using my proper name,” he teases softly, “I hope you know you, just about, gave me a heart attack when you said ‘Steve,’ instead of any other weird nickname you’ve given me,” a stupid goofy grin crosses his face at your scoff.
“You're such a hopeless, lovesick puppy, and I say that as your favorite person,” you smile as you speak, proud of yourself. He laughs at the stupid comment because it's too true.
“Well then, that's perfect because the one I'm love sick for is you,” the words are soft and tender. Still, as he speaks he pulls you flush against him, making your face light up like a light bulb. “You're cute when you blush,” he whispers teasingly in your ear.
“Then shut up and kiss me, Harrington,” using Harrington is funny, everytime you use it it's to get him to stop being annoying. Now you're telling him to kiss you. So he does.
The kiss is soft, gentle, as if he was scared you'd shatter under the kiss. You wrap your arms around his neck pulling him closer before pulling back, your forehead on his. His cheeks are lightly dusted with a pink shade that makes him even more handsome.
“Maybe we should go inside before my neighbors think I’m a hooker again,” Steve bursts out laughing at the comment.
“Again?” He asks, slightly teasing, but it’s a genuine question.
“Don’t ask. It’s a long story,” you say, pulling him into the house by his collar, shutting the door behind you.
Steve leans in, his lips brushing softly against yours. The kiss starts soft, yet intense at the same time. Steve starts backing you both up. You hit the kitchen counter, the edge digging into your lower back. Steve grabs your waist, lifting you onto the counter, and pulling a yelp and giggle from you.
Just as Steve starts to get a little handsy, his hand sliding up your shirt, the other tugging at your collar, the door bursts open with a loud, “BOOM!” Robin comes in with her usual enthusiastic greeting, “Helllooooooooo best frie- what the hell??” She pauses, taking a second before saying a very loud, and very Robin, “EWWWWWWWWW!!!! Get a room you two!”
She walks over, grabs Steve by the nape of his neck and rips him from in-between your legs. Robin replaces him with herself, “Hey there, sweet cheeks,” she says in a flirtatious tone.
“Robinnn, what did I tell you about acting like we’re in a homosexual relationship?”
“Not to do it…”
“That’s right. Now move, I’m trying to get dicked down tonight.”
“Good luck with that. But remember, if it doesn’t work out tonight, my strap is always ready. And we all know you two are quite acquainted~”
Steve’s jaw drops, his eyes so wide they look like they could pop out at any second. “What the hell is going on?!”
Robin looks over her shoulder, smirks at him, then leaves slamming the door behind her with the same loud, “BOOM!”
Steve looks even more bewildered, “So, uh, what was that about?”
“So, you remember how I told you my neighbors thought I was a hooker?”
The End :3
