modern au: gabrielle and steven are divorced or separated. when they talk it’s over the phone and usually about Roland, making plans for him to visit one or the other for the weekend and or how Roland is doing at school, etc, and their talking is always friendly but always distant and mostly-formal and cautious. the closest they get to casual is when gabrielle starts texting steven to ask him for advice about her budding career in politics. 

one day steven texts gabrielle about the girl roland met on his summer vacation - moreover, about her aunt. susan’s aunt is absolutely angling to marry steven for his money and he can’t be outright mean to her because his son is so ridiculously into susan so steven wants to be on good terms with her family. 

the solution? fake date gabrielle. of course. she tentatively agrees. steven is finally in a position to (albeit accidentally) tell/show gabrielle that he loves her and they begin tentatively working through their issues. at the end they’re not solidly back together again but are agreed to very slowly very cautiously start dating again.

i’d consider paying someone to write this.

4. Three shots in rapid succession show Mid-World in all its terrible beauty. The first shot is of an endless plane, storm clouds gathering above, tinted red by the sunset. The second shot is of the silhouette of a man through barley, shaking his hand to put out a match he used to light a cigarette. The third shot is what seems to be a dead body, in various states of decomposition. It has been overgrown by what seems to be moss, lichen and other colourful growths. The upper part of the skull, cleaned of any decaying flesh, is pushed upwards by the sprouting lichen. Antlers seem to have grown out of it as it decomposed. The text reads: "I think this is the prettiest world––".

5. Roland is in a forest, on his knees. He wears old, trail-frayed clothes, and looks blankly off-camera. His eyes are swimming in tears, ringed red. He swallows hard. He has just buried his son, Jake, and must now gather the courage to stand again. The text reads: "so long as you don't mind a little dying."

Steven slips away from her with the ease of a cold summer stream. Roland drinks the blood that raised his father too, becomes more hawk than man, more beast than flesh of God. And Marten? Marten finds her at the bottom of the well, and Marten pushes her head beneath the water. She finds that letting herself die, then, is perhaps the greatest act of courage she could gift herself.

Or, the last days of Gabrielle Deschain, and the madness between them.
