Colville, Steven Gilbert, Revival, 2018.
I came to interpret them fictionally in the comic, to make this character of the girl as a victim of Bernardo, I knew it wouldn’t be pleasant to draw. I didn’t want it to be titillating or exciting, I wanted it to be horrible. And I felt horrible drawing it and I talked to people who felt pretty horrible reading it, so I suppose it was successful if it’s possible to say this.

We welcome back the Deconstructing Comics Podcast tonight, as they talk at length with retailer and comic creator Steven Gilbert.

Steven Gilbert's Colville Is Disturbing And Entrancing
Steven Gilbert’s Colville Is Disturbing And Entrancing
I picked up Steven Gilbert’s Colville a few months ago. I didn’t know what to expect. All that I knew about it was that it was a Canadian work and had been a long time in the making. At first I thought that the name might be a reference to the Canadian painter Alex Colvillewhose moody and mysteriously noir-ish paintings are celebrated here, but it turns out that Colville is the name of the town…

MARCH 2018 TORONTO COMICON: AN INTERVIEW WITH CARTOONIST STEVEN GILBERT
On Saturday of the Comicon, I conducted an interview with Doug Wright Award winning cartoonist Steven Gilbert, an individual whom I’ve never met before in my entire life. Besides writing and illustrating graphic novels, Steven also runs a comic shop in Newmarket, “Fourth Dimension Comics”. I must visit this place at some point! T: Give me a general overview of your books. Steven: I create “Cowboy Pornography”; cowboy stories featuring pornography. I also enjoy writing small town crime stories, tales about bad people doing bad things. T: What can you tell me about your newest book? Steven: I recently published the new Secret Lodge, a travelog of my hometown Newmarket. It’s an epic 300-page cowboy crime story. T: Do you have any formal art training? Steven: I’m entirely self-taught.* *note: Very impressive! This requires much discipline. T: Do you ever work digitally? Steven: Not in the slightest. T: When were you first published? Steven: In highschool. I had some single-page comics published in the school paper. T: About Colville. I heard that you published some of the issues years ago? Steven: Colville is based on true events from the 90’s. When the actual crimes occurred, I knew I had to make comics about them. I published a small portion in 1997, but it was then abandoned and left unfinished* *until recently! The entire graphic novel is currently available! T: What made you go back to it? Steven: I’ve always thought, I’ve had this obsession for 15 years. And the time to finish the story was now right. T: What’s next? Steven: The 3rd volume of Secret Lodge. T: Will it feature pornography?* *this is a very important question. Steven: It will have questionable material! I’m also working on another graphic novel, which will be the greatest Wolverine story ever told. T: Who are your 5 favorite cartoonists? Steven: I’d say Chester Brown, Dan Clowes, Seth…a new cartoonist Noah van Sciver…I also really enjoyed Eddie Campbell’s art in From Hell. His style was an influence on Secret Lodge. T: Do you have an internet presence? Steven: You can look for me on Facebook. I’ve also been featured in The Comics Journal in an article about Colville (find this at: http://www.tcj.com/reviews/colville-and-black-river/ ) T: I’m running out of note paper. Quick! What’s your favorite burger topping? Steven: Uhh…pickles.* *pickles are foul. T: Thanks for your time! I look forward to future books! The interview then concluded, and my companions and I continued our journey through the Dealer’s Room. Later on that day, Steven noticed me walking by his booth with my face buried entirely in a bag of sugar donuts. He decided it would be in my best interest to relieve me of one.
