From Chapter 6
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Stevie looked at herself in the mirror. Athletic build sure but… the right makeup. I could pass in this.
Her euphoria was interrupted by her best friend's exclamation, "Stevie!” Robin pointed and then hissed, “hickies." They trailed up her right shoulder, coincidentally the one she’d lowered once the zipper had been handled.
Nancy blinked. "Jeez Stevie. I mean I didn't doubt it, I guess, but Eddie's really um… physical huh?"
Stevie swallowed and looked at her ex. She felt like the embarrassment just might kill her. Nancy was so cool and collected, and Stevie was a blushing deviant that wanted to melt into the floor. "Is it really that noticeable?" She turned to try and see the ones she knew were on the top of her shoulder right before her neck. For whatever reason that was Eddie's favorite spot to plant them.
"You look slutty for sure," Robin teased, standing behind her. Stevie realized she was standing in her own dress. The tags dangled from the side of a very short number that looked basically like a long men's waistcoat that buttoned on one side. Robin put her hands around Stevie’s waist. On her tiptoes, she leaned her head against Stevie's other shoulder, and they looked at their reflection together.
"You falling for him now?
"Eddie, the freak, Munson?" Stevie'd intended to scoff and really lay on the disbelief. That’s… it’s ridiculous. But it didn't come out harshly at all. She gulped. "He's just my New Year's date."
Robin pulled off the snort Stevie hadn't with ease. "Okay, dingus."
"You don't believe me?" Stevie bit her lip and raised her arm, trying to get the zipper back down.
Nancy frowned a little. She stepped forward and got the zipper down with chilly, deft fingers. She spoke softly. "I don't want to see you heart broken again."
