WAIT A MINUTE YOU LIVE IN TOWSON?? I grew up in Bel Air!
My grandparents used to live there!
dragonsandbubblebaths: I feel reeeaaally stupid, but if feminism is equality for everyone, why isn't it called humanism? My father (a straight white male, shocker) and I were arguing about feminism and he believed it was unnecessary, and was only made so women could rule over men. Then he asked the question above and I really didn't know how to answer it. Could you help? Please and thank you! ;v;
stfusexists: The reason it isn’t called “humanism" is because all humans are not affected equally by gender discrimination. We live in a society in which traits, actions, and behaviors that are seen as traditionally “feminine" are not valued, while traits, actions, and behaviors that are seen as traditionally “masculine" are. Women are discriminated against both for defying their gender roles and having “masculine" traits and for being too “feminine," and men are discriminated against for being “feminine" also. (People who don’t fit into the gender binary are just oppressed six ways from Sunday when it comes to society.)
Women are the ones who face the various wage gaps. Women are the bulk of domestic violence and sexual assault victims. Women, while on average more likely to obtain a college degree, are less likely to be employed than their male counterparts. Women, who make up 51% of the population, only account for 18% of elected offices at the federal level in the US.
I could go on and on all day, but the short answer is because women and femininity are who and what is directly devalued and attacked in our present society. Once these problems are fixed, we can acquiesce under the great banner of humanism, but let’s be honest: we’ll all be long dead by then.
Welp, today a bunch of power hungry, ignorant asshole men are going to vote on whether or not I, along with all other Texan women, get to keep our constitutional rights. Awesome. Great way to move forward, guys. -.-

I kind of want to let STFUsexists know that a post she recently reblogged came from someone who was, to my understanding, incredibly transphobic. I mean, just look at this post and tell me it doesn't make you feel uncomfortable. Really, look at it. Look at the tags. I mean, the blogger herself does make some really good points here and there, but when something like THAT shows up, I get all kinds of uncomfortable chills.
I mean, what should I do? Should I leave her be? I don't want to reblog it because I don't want to cause enough trouble already (and possibly have the OP find out and rip me a new asshole). I don't really want to send her a message because 1) she's apparently really busy right now getting a job or something (her blog is blanked out for the time being for that reason) and I don't want to disturb her or anything and 2) my message would be too long for an ask and apparently not a lot of people like fanmail. (Am I the only one who genuinely likes fanmail?)
I don't know. It's just...this is the reason why I cannot trust radical feminists. Coupled with from the whole mantra of how the patriarchy is so strong women literally don't have any choice/freedom whatsoever or no forms of sexuality seem to belong to women (I believe that it is possible to try to reclaim things that have been oppressive and use it as something positive, but maybe I'm just an uneducated dipshit), the fact that so many of these women are so transphobic is just disgusting. There's a reason why a lot of trans* people don't trust cis people and chant "die cis scum". Trans* people, ESPECIALLY trans women, are constantly thrown under the bus in so-called 'progressive' movements. Why? I just don't even get it! Like, I get how some people may be clueless or don't want to say or do anything so as not to fuck up, but if you deliberately go OUT OF YOUR WAY to make trans* people look/feel inferior, you're not being progressive, or a feminist. You're just being an entitled asshole.
(The worst part is, apparently radical feminism WAS originally created to include LGBTQ women of colour. For some reason, white cis women took the title and turned it into a racist, cissexist, holier-than-thou movement. That's all sorts of depressing.)
I only know ONE radical feminist who is trans*, aptly named radtransfem (or radtransfeminist in some spaces). I'm not 100% what her/their politics are (though she/they have stated that is IS possible for sex positive and sex negative feminists to work together, isn't that a shocker as a lot of radical feminists prefer to bash other feminists as opposed to try to work WITH them), but from what I've seen, it's reasonable. And I guess more and more people are reclaiming the movement, but, until the movement is FULLY reclaimed and all traces of racism and cissexism and holier-than-thou attitudes are gone, I'm still not going to gravitate to it.
At any rate, I just hate the fact that transmisogny and transphobia is so entrenched in our world. It's bad enough that the world is sexist and racist and heterosexist as is. The fact that it's also incredibly cissexist/transphobic to the point that even a good chunk of so-called feminists and progressives exclude the trans* community from their movement is just tragic. Like, if you're a lesbian but say that you just can't enjoy penises, regardless of someone's gender identity in a respectful manner so something (like, "I find penises gross. I respect that you have a penis and I will support you and your significant other if you find them, but I cannot have that type of relationship with you due to my preferences, now we've come to an understanding" or something, though if an individual in particular is being aggressive or needlessly hostile/offensive, you can call them out on their bullshit), that's fine. But if you feel the need to totally demonize trans* people or say that, no matter what they do/say, underneath it all they are still their assigned sex, you're not doing feminism any favours. Feminism, in my eyes, fights for ALL people oppressed by the (white, cis, heterosexist) patriarchy to achieve their freedom, be it equality or liberation. If you respect the needs for other people but don't feel they can truly be 'feminists' or should stick as allies, I guess that's okay, but if you're actively shaming/putting down (rather than critique/help) people who are ALSO oppressed every day, in many cases to worse degrees than cis women, you are no better than the system that oppresses us all. You're just fighting for your own personal benefits at the expense of others.
Just, ugh. Word vomit. I'm really sorry. But I needed to let this out. And if I misinterpreted the linked post, I'm also really sorry, I'll take this down/edit this (though I think it's worth mentioning that that's the ONLY time the blogger actively mentions trans* people/trans* women, and it's irksome that she addresses them in such a manner). Please don't reply to this. This is just me ranting. (If I get a 'radical feminist' coming in and telling me something that reeks of transphobia or how I'm another helpless victim of the patriarchy who has no sense of critical thinking or power or shit, way to prove my fucking point. Don't bother unless you ARE intersectional and want to assure me that you're decidedly NOT transphobic. I just hope the feminists I already follow aren't transphobic as fuck.)
But yeah. You should get the gist of it.
I hate the world.
"A man charged with beating a monkey to death with a tree branch at a zoo in Boise, Idaho, last fall has pleaded guilty to animal cruelty. ...[He] faces up to seven years in prison for the felony and six months incarceration on the animal cruelty charge." All well and good, but then: "A man from O'Fallon, Mo., who had sexual contact with a 10-year-old girl in his home on several occasions was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison. Cody Lee Bonecutter, 19, ...pleaded guilty to one count of statutory rape, two counts of statutory sodomy and filing a false report." The monkey-killer got a longer prison sentence than a piece of shit who raped a 10-year-old girl.
Then There was actually a second story about statutory rape, this time involving a ten-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl. That forty-four-year-old bad person, named James Arthur Gardner, was facing ten years in prison until he was sent to the Sex Offender Rehabilitation and Treatment Service in Farmington. I'm not sure if he has to spend all ten years there, but it still seems like a really light sentence for probably costing extremely long-term damage to little kids.
All three stories are from the St. Louis Post Dispatch
