Atheist in Church
I made my annual Christmas mass church appearance this evening. I'm obviously not religious and go because I enjoy spending time with my family. The Christmas service is always a big deal. It's one of those trendy modern churches where they play electric guitars during songs and the youth pastors all look like they're trying too hard (Look, kids! I have a fauxhawk and am wearing jeans and Converse with my unbuttoned vest and tie. I'm a cool guy and I like Jesus so you can still be cool and like Jesus!) so they put on a big show for Christmas. The first time we went, maybe 4 years ago, they did skits and elaborate musical performances. It was pretty interesting and mostly secular until the pastor did a more formal sermon toward the end. They've gotten steadily shittier since then. Tonight's was basically a glorified mass. I haven't been sleeping well the past few nights (Assumed nightmares about the movie Begotten, despite the fact I haven't seen it and don't remember them. I just wake up terrified and the gif of God Killing Himself freaks me the fuck out!) and I dozed off during on of those horrible repetitive songs, the ones that repeat the same line like 15 times in a row. Ironically, the title of this sermon (because they always name them) was Awaken.
The average Christian sitting in the average church listening to the average Sunday sermon has achieved a level of arrogance unimaginable in scientific discourse.
