Vanitas didn't know what he was doing. At all. After waking up with a fever of 40.3oC, he's practically been forced to stay in bed all day by his own rebelling body. Moving caused jolts of pain through his head, his limbs heavy and awkward, brain unable to focus, fuzzy around the edges.

On a normal day, Vanitas would never point a gun at Emyd. After all, he adored his soulmate.... but it wasn't Emyd he was seeing in front of him. Ahead of him stood a dark figure, almost like a shadow, blurring and fuzzing around the edges as Vanitas' own consciousness did.

So, he did the only thing he could at the sign of a threat. Reached into his bedside table and pulled out the handgun he stored there. After all, the person near his bed had to be an intruder, and that was what the gun was for. He climbed out of bed, stumbling and trembling, careful not to move his gaze away from the unknown figure.

"W-What have you done with him..?! W-Where's Emyd..?! I-I'll shoot..!"

Sitting up and wildly looking around, Vanitas did his best to calm his racing heart, to put on a calm facade so Emyd didn’t know what was really going through his mind. He hadn’t meant for the words to escape at all, they’d stemmed from a nap on the couch turning into his own personal nightmare. As he’d woken, it wasn’t Emyd he’d seen. “Nothing, n-nevermind.” Vanitas stammered in response, pulling up a hand to rub at his eyes in hopes to clear the tears that had begun forming from his shock. Hopefully, his soulmate assumed he was rubbing sleep from his eyes. Emyd didn’t know about his previous relationship, Emyd didn’t have to know about his previous relationship. The last thing he wanted was to be seen as a weakling.

With a hand pressed to his ribs, a soft wheeze escaped his lips as he glared at Even.

“I am trying.”

It was inevitable that Emyd throwing his trust in random people was going to get him hurt.

“I understand you’re in a great deal of pain, Emyd, but I am trying to be sure your lung isn’t collapsed before I treat those ribs.”

The diaphragm of Even’s stethoscope presses lightly to Emyd’s back and he furrows his eyebrows to listen much more intently for any hitches or wet bubbling.

“One more deep breath, nice and slow.”

Vanitas couldn’t help but smirk a little at those word, shuffling a bit so he sat behind Emyd with his legs either side, trapping him in his arms around the blonde’s chest and nuzzling his head in the back of his neck. “You’re right, you are way more of an asshole, but I still love you more than anything.”

Rebels on the Run

Date night was Vanitas' favourite night, especially as they were few and far between,  usually involving bribes in order to make his soulmate actually listen to him and go out for the night with him. Of course, this particular night Vanitas had wanted to go to the movies...specifically to see kung fu panda.

It took a lot of bribing. A lot. But eventually, Emyd agreed to it on a few conditions. One, Vanitas paid for the tickets and the food. Two, Emyd was allowed to complain the entire time. And three, Vanitas had to promise him a night full of sex, including biting and roughness. Vanitas agreed.

So now they were walking down the street towards their local cinema, and Vanitas couldn't be happier. He had his soulmate agreeing to watch what was obviously going to be a terrible movie, a night full of sex ahead of him, it was going to be bliss.

At least, he hoped so.
