When I first saw a boy have armpit hair I was embarrassed for him that he didn't shave because I had just had been told I needed to. When I mentioned how I was put off by that to my friends, they all told me "well boys don't have to shave". I was embarrassed that I didn't know this double-standard and felt even more shame for having it. Since I was five years old I was made fun of for having more hair than others. I was teased and called a man when I was just a little girl and resented the fact I had been born female. I've since let it go, but I think of memories like this and think of the person I could have been if I wasn't ashamed of having something as natural as body hair.
